Cristhian Mosquera's Hamstring Issue: Arsenal's Defensive Dilemma

Cristhian Mosquera’s hamstring scare has given Arsenal a fresh headache, but Mikel Arteta insists the defender’s problem should not be long-term.

The centre-back limped out of the win over Aston Villa last week, immediately reaching for the middle of his hamstring as he sat down on the turf. Arteta tried to calm the mood afterwards, explaining: “He is fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something.”

A few days later, the concern sharpened. Mosquera was nowhere to be seen in the squad for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea, his place in the XI taken by Ezri Konsa, who was handed his full debut for the club.

Arteta later confirmed the obvious: this is a muscle issue.

“He had a muscular issue, and we think it's not too much,” the Arsenal manager said after the Chelsea game. “But we need to wait and see the next few days for how it evolves.”

That wait now shapes Arsenal’s week. With the trip to Napoli on Wednesday looming, Mosquera’s chances of featuring look slim. The medical team will keep assessing him, but a more realistic target is the weekend meeting with Sunderland, when the risk of a setback should be clearer.

In the short term, Konsa’s impact at Stamford Bridge offers genuine reassurance. Thrown straight into the starting lineup, the defender delivered a composed, aggressive performance, highlighted by a thunderous challenge on former teammate Morgan Rogers that drew a roar from the away end and underlined his readiness for this stage.

There is still a balance to strike. Konsa has only just returned from his holidays and Arteta will be wary of asking too much, too soon from a player still building full match sharpness. Yet if the staff are satisfied with his physical levels, there will be little hesitation about his quality. On the evidence of his debut, he already looks comfortable carrying the responsibility Mosquera has temporarily left behind.
