Cole Palmer Withdraws from England Squad Due to Injury
Cole Palmer’s international return has been cut short before it even began.
The Chelsea forward is set to withdraw from England’s Nations League squad with a minor injury, a fresh setback just as he looked ready to re-establish himself on the international stage.
Recalled by Thomas Tuchel after being controversially overlooked for the World Cup, Palmer arrived in camp with a clear message from his national team manager ringing in his ears. Tuchel had said the 24-year-old had “a point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination”. It was a challenge laid down. Palmer will now have to wait to answer it.
Instead of using the extended international window to cement his place, the forward will miss a four-game block that could shape England’s Nations League campaign. The Three Lions host World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on 26 September, travel to the Czech Republic on 29 September and Croatia on 3 October, then return home to face the Czechs again on 6 October.
The timing is awkward. Palmer played the full 90 minutes for Chelsea in their 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another heavy workload in what has already been a demanding start to the season. After a summer on the sidelines of the World Cup, he has come back sharp and central to Chelsea’s plans: six starts in seven games, five full matches, four goals, two assists. Tuchel noticed. So did everyone else.
But the warning signs around his fitness have been there before. Palmer was troubled by a recurring groin problem in the 2025-26 season, an issue that baffled then Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, now in charge at Manchester City, who said the situation “did not make sense”. That history will make England’s medical team cautious, even if this latest issue is described as minor.
For Palmer, the frustration will be acute. His last England appearance came in March, a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan. Since then he has rebuilt his form and reputation at club level, pushed his way back into the national conversation, and finally earned a recall. Now, just as the door reopened, injury has nudged it shut again.
Tuchel wanted to see if Palmer could seize his moment. The question now is whether he can stay fit long enough this season to make sure the next opportunity doesn’t slip away.
