City Faces Champions League Challenge with Squad Changes
City head into Europe with a perfect league record still gleaming, but Enzo Maresca will not be rolling out the same XI that squeezed past Coventry. A narrow 1-0 win, sealed by yet another Erling Haaland strike, kept their domestic momentum intact. It also underlined something else: this squad is about to be stretched.
Injuries and late reshuffles
Coventry brought more than just three points. It brought problems.
Nico O’Reilly was set to start, only to pull up in the warm-up with a lower back issue. His absence forced a reshuffle, with Enzo Fernandez drafted in at short notice. Then Deadline Day signing Iliman Ndiaye limped off with a knock, adding his name to a treatment room already occupied by winger Jeremy Doku.
For a side about to open a Champions League campaign, the timing was awkward. Maresca, though, had already nailed his colours to the mast.
Maresca’s promise: youth and fresh legs
He had flagged changes for the Estadio Do Dragao even before the injuries hit. Speaking after the Coventry win, he laid out his thinking clearly: Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ryan McAidoo and Ndiaye need European minutes, and they will get them.
“We saw today with Ayyoub [Bouaddi], [Ryan] McAidoo, Iliman Ndiaye, they haven’t played in Champions League but they need to start, so on Tuesday they are going to start to get minutes in the Champions League,” he said.
The plan is bold. It is also necessary. City are fighting on four fronts and Maresca knows he cannot lean on the same core group every three days.
Ndiaye decision looms
The big question is Ndiaye. His knock against Coventry raised doubts over his involvement in Porto, but he has since been pictured in training, a strong hint that he is ready to be involved.
If he is passed fit, he is expected to start off the left, offering direct running and a different type of threat. That would see Antoine Semenyo step aside, with McAidoo taking over on the right flank and Enzo Fernandez operating as the No 10, tasked with knitting attacks together between the lines.
Behind them, Bouaddi will sit alongside Elliot Anderson at the base of midfield, a blend of youthful energy and control in front of what should be an unchanged back four: Josko Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov. Matheus Nunes has been named in the travelling party and could also be involved, giving Maresca another option if the tempo needs to change.
Haaland to start – but not every time
Up front, the equation is simple. Haaland scores, City win. He delivered again against Coventry, and Maresca is acutely aware of the need to manage his minutes without blunting the team’s edge.
The head coach has already warned that Haaland will have to be rotated in the coming weeks as the fixtures pile up. For now, though, with the Champions League group stage opening and City keen to stamp authority early, the prolific Norwegian is still expected to lead the line in Portugal.
Rotation is coming. For Maresca, the challenge is clear: refresh the side, trust the next wave, and keep winning while the stakes rise.
