Chelsea vs Brighton: Is Moises Caicedo Ready for Sunday?

Chelsea face Brighton on Sunday with one question hanging over everything else: is Moises Caicedo ready?

Xabi Alonso wants his midfield anchor on the pitch at Stamford Bridge. The Ecuadorian picked up an injury in training last week, missed the wins over Fulham and Luton Town, and remains under assessment.

“He is hopefully training [on Friday]. We are hopeful he can be involved. We are still checking; no decision made,” Alonso said. Translation: optimism, but no promises.

Caicedo call will define Chelsea’s midfield

With Caicedo, Chelsea gain control, aggression and structure in the centre of the pitch. Without him, they still have choices, but the dynamic changes.

Reece James, Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia are all available and offer different profiles if Alonso has to improvise. Enzo Fernandez is another delicate situation. He was expected to be in the squad against Luton but did not make it, and interest from Manchester City has only intensified the noise around him. For Sunday, the only thing that matters is whether he is fit and picked.

Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra are still sidelined, which narrows the options. That is why Caicedo’s status carries so much weight. Chelsea can patch things up for a game or two without him. They are still a better, more convincing team when he is patrolling midfield.

Martinez arrival sharpens goalkeeper debate

In goal, the situation is no longer a slow burn. Robert Sanchez is sliding down the pecking order after Chelsea agreed a £7.5 million deal with Aston Villa for Emiliano Martinez.

Mike Penders started the 2-0 win over Luton, with Sanchez watching from the bench. Alonso has already made up his mind for Brighton, but he is keeping it to himself. The choice on Sunday will say plenty about how quickly Martinez is expected to take over and where Sanchez fits in the new hierarchy.

Defensive boost as Fofana returns

At the back, there is at least one clear positive. Wesley Fofana returns from suspension and is available for his first competitive appearance of the season, a timely injection of experience and presence.

Young defender Josh Acheampong is also set to be in the squad again. Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda missed the Luton game, but Alonso played down any serious concern.

“Our plan is that they are training [Friday] preparing for Sunday. With Levi, we know three games in a week after the injury, missing a period, he needs to take the right steps. We don't want to push him too much. So he feels comfortable,” the head coach explained.

Palmer to lead new-look attack

Cole Palmer completed the full 90 minutes on Thursday and there is no sign that he will be rested. He is expected to continue as the creative hub in attack, with Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro alongside him as Chelsea try to sharpen a new-look front line.

The predicted XI, in a 3-4-2-1, looks like this: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Acheampong; Gusto, Caicedo, James, Chavarria; Palmer, Rogers; Joao Pedro.

Caicedo and Fernandez remain the major doubts. Palestra and Henderson are out. Kick-off is 2pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Stamford Bridge.

For Chelsea, the brief is brutally simple: get Caicedo on the pitch if they can, settle the goalkeeper hierarchy, and own the midfield. The rest of their season might start to take shape from there.
