Chelsea's Late Decision on Moisés Caicedo's Fitness Ahead of Derby

Chelsea will leave it late on Moisés Caicedo’s fitness, with a final call on the midfielder not due until Saturday – just 24 hours before they face the Premier League champions.

The 24-year-old’s season has barely started and already feels stop–start. He missed the opening league win over Fulham, then sat out the Carabao Cup victory against Luton Town. When he finally stepped onto the pitch against Brighton & Hove Albion last Sunday, coming on in the 68th minute of a wild 4-3 win, his night lasted only 14 minutes before he went down and needed treatment.

He walked off under his own steam, but the fact this is a recurring problem has raised alarms at Cobham. Chelsea know exactly how important he is. So does their manager.

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Alonso refused to make any promises about Caicedo’s involvement in the derby. The Ecuador international, vice-captain behind Reece James and already on 149 appearances for the club since his move from Brighton in August 2023, has become a central pillar of this side, even in a campaign that ended with Chelsea marooned in 10th.

“We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso told reporters, keeping his cards close. He urged calm while the medical staff continue their checks, adding: “We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision.”

A New-Look Chelsea Midfield

This uncertainty comes at a time of major change in the middle of the pitch. Enzo Fernandez’s departure to Manchester City forced Chelsea to reshape the heart of their team, and the club responded aggressively in the market.

Valentin Barco has arrived to inject youth and dynamism. Jordan Henderson has been brought in to steady things, a veteran voice and a player Alonso clearly trusts to manage big moments.

“[We have] different qualities, personalities,” Alonso said when asked about his options. “Valentin’s young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what’s going on in the games. He’s getting closer, closer to playing time.”

The pressure of the Premier League schedule will test that depth quickly. Chelsea are facing a difficult run, and this derby, with both sides perfect after two games, already feels like an early marker.

Perfect Starts on the Line

If Caicedo does not come through his fitness test, Alonso will turn to those alternative plans. Arsenal and Chelsea both arrive at the weekend with maximum points: the Gunners having seen off Coventry City and Aston Villa, the Blues edging past Fulham and then Brighton.

Alonso insists his system does not hinge on one man, however influential. He pointed to the versatility and options he still has at his disposal.

“We have Rom (Romeo Lavia), Reece (James) as well, Malo (Gusto) – he can play [in midfield],” the manager said, underlining his belief that the structure can survive even if one of its key pieces is missing.

The tactical blueprint is drawn. The squad is stocked with contrasting profiles, from Barco’s spark to Henderson’s control. Now everything rests on Saturday’s verdict on Caicedo – and how Chelsea cope if that answer is no.
