Chelsea Faces Late Changes as James and Joao Pedro Miss Brentford Match
Chelsea forced into late reshuffle as James and Joao Pedro miss Brentford trip
Reece James didn’t just disappear from Chelsea’s teamsheet on Friday night. His absence was the result of a race against time that the captain ultimately lost.
The defender completed the full 90 minutes in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Hull City, but picked up a minor hamstring problem during the game. Chelsea’s staff tracked every step of his recovery through the week and right up to the morning of the trip to Brentford, hoping their captain could push through.
He couldn’t.
Head coach Alonso laid out the sequence of events, making clear this was no tactical surprise but a medical call made at the last possible moment.
"He's had a little injury in his hamstring. He tried and we waited until this morning. He tried to make it but he couldn't. Now we have enough time to prepare for the next one. He was just short of recovering," Alonso said.
For a side built so heavily around James’ influence, that late verdict forced a rapid rethink. His role in Chelsea’s structure is central, and the back line had to be reshaped on the fly, with the coaching staff prioritising caution over short-term gain as a demanding run of fixtures looms.
James ruled out, Joao Pedro joins absentee list
James wasn’t the only major name missing. Joao Pedro, electric across the opening weeks of the season, also sat out the Brentford clash.
The forward has started the campaign in blistering form, with three goals and three assists in his first four Premier League matches. He was decisive against Hull City as well, registering both a goal and an assist in that draw.
Losing that level of productivity would unsettle most managers. Alonso instead turned to Danny Welbeck, bringing him into the front line to cover Joao Pedro’s absence.
"You have another front three with Danny and Pedro [sic]. I think we wanted to have a good enough squad to deal with injury, in this case Joao," Alonso explained. "Danny has connections and scored here last season - we are prepared for tonight. We always try to assess the whole squad, what we have today, a tough game for sure. We need to deal with situations but always the most competitive one."
The message was clear: this is exactly why Chelsea built depth. Injuries were expected. Excuses were not.
International break looms large
Chelsea now turn towards Bournemouth on October 10, after the international break, with two key fitness questions hanging over the squad.
Joao Pedro has already withdrawn from the Brazil squad for their upcoming fixtures, underlining the concern around his condition. James, meanwhile, sits out at a time when England manager Thomas Tuchel is already juggling problems across several positions, a situation that recently led to Trent Alexander-Arnold being recalled.
For Alonso, the break arrives as both a frustration and an opportunity. Chelsea lose rhythm, but gain time. Time for scans, for treatment, for rehab plans to stick.
Time to find out whether James and Joao Pedro will be ready when the Premier League intensity returns — or whether Chelsea’s depth will be tested all over again.
