Chelsea Injury Update Ahead of Hull City Match

Chelsea will go into their Premier League meeting with Hull City still without four key names, with Xabi Alonso confirming his injury list has not shortened ahead of Saturday.

The news comes just days after Chelsea steadied themselves with a dramatic Carabao Cup comeback win over Leeds United, a response to the bruising derby defeat to Arsenal last weekend. Alonso rotated heavily in midweek, but when the tie started to slip, the big guns were summoned. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers had to climb off the bench to drag the Blues into the fourth round.

Now the focus turns back to the league – and to who won’t be there.

Caicedo ruled out again

Moises Caicedo remains the headline absentee in midfield. The Ecuador international is still not ready to return and will miss the Hull clash.

“Not yet,” Alonso said on Friday when asked if Caicedo could be involved. “Let’s see for Brentford, but unluckily not at the moment to take risks with him. Not yet, we are not there yet.”

Caicedo picked up his injury before the season even started. He finally made his first appearance of the campaign in late August, coming off the bench in the 4-3 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion, only to suffer a setback that forced him off again. Since then, Chelsea have been left to patch up the middle of the pitch without their star signing.

Trio of summer signings still waiting

The wait goes on as well for three of Chelsea’s summer arrivals: Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson, and Emmanuel Emegha.

Alonso was blunt when asked if any of them could feature against Hull. The answer was simply “no”.

“Not tomorrow,” he added when pressed specifically on Henderson and Emegha. “We hope they can be (available) for Brentford, and we will see.”

Palestra, like Caicedo, was injured on the eve of the season and has not yet pulled on a Chelsea shirt in a competitive game. Henderson and Emegha are in the same boat: all three signings are still waiting for their official debuts.

There is at least a hint of progress. Palestra has started individual training, a clear sign he is edging closer to a return. Henderson has already rejoined team sessions after fracturing his left forearm during the 2026 World Cup, but the medical staff have not signed off on him playing yet.

International break shapes Chelsea’s thinking

Chelsea have just two fixtures left before the extended September international break, starting with Hull and followed by Brentford. This break will stretch over three weeks, with nations cramming four games into that window after two international periods were merged into one. There will be no separate break in October.

That calendar twist is dictating Chelsea’s approach. With a longer pause on the horizon, the club see little sense in gambling on early returns for Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, or Emegha. Rest now, or risk losing them again when the schedule tightens.

If anyone does make it back ahead of time, the signs point towards Palestra and Henderson as the likeliest to sneak in before the break. For now, though, Alonso goes into another Premier League weekend knowing his bench will be lighter than he would like – and that Chelsea’s season, already demanding, is being shaped as much by the treatment room as by the touchline.
