Chelsea's Anxious Wait Over Joao Pedro's Knee Injury
Chelsea are facing an anxious wait over Joao Pedro after the in-form forward pulled out of Brazil’s squad for the upcoming international break with a knee injury.
The Brazilian has been one of the few bright sparks in Chelsea’s stuttering start, racking up three goals and three assists in just four league games. He has become central to Xabi Alonso’s attacking blueprint, knitting play together with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer and giving the Blues a cutting edge they have too often lacked.
That is why last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Hull City came at a cost. Joao Pedro is believed to have suffered the knee problem in that game, even though he stayed on the pitch and struck a late equaliser. The goal masked the concern. The aftermath did not.
He sat out training in the days that followed, with Reece James also absent, and neither made the squad for Friday night’s bruising 3-0 defeat at Brentford. Without their number nine, Chelsea looked blunt. Danny Welbeck stepped in but never truly threatened, unable to mirror Joao Pedro’s sharp movement or his understanding with Rogers and Palmer. The fluency that had started to emerge simply vanished.
Alonso has offered little clarity. Before the trip to the Gtech Community Stadium, he admitted only that Joao Pedro would be given a late fitness test, refusing to elaborate on the extent of the issue. The message was tight-lipped, the concern obvious.
Behind the scenes, though, there is cautious optimism.
Reports in Brazil from ESPN indicate Joao Pedro is facing around three weeks on the sidelines. That timeline rules him out of Brazil’s two friendlies against Australia but points to a return in time for Chelsea’s next Premier League outing after the international break.
For Chelsea, that is the key. The Blues are winless in three league matches and drifting. When Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge next month, the fixture will carry the weight of a must-win.
They will want their new talisman back on the pitch, not watching from the stands.
