Chelsea’s Alonso Keeps Brentford Plans Uncertain as Caicedo Nears Return
Xabi Alonso is taking this one right to the wire.
The Chelsea head coach will not finalise his starting XI for Friday night’s trip to Brentford until the morning of the game, with several key names still being carefully managed behind the scenes.
Moises Caicedo is edging closer. Reece James is still on the long road back. No one, though, has been officially ruled out.

Caicedo’s condition is improving quickly, with the medical staff encouraged by his recent work. Alonso, though, is refusing to promise anything until he sees how the Ecuadorian midfielder reacts to late fitness tests. The message is clear: no risks, not in this schedule, not with this opponent.
James remains on his recovery protocol, with the captain’s workload still being tightly controlled. His situation will also be assessed again before Alonso commits to a final plan.
On the other side of the pitch, Brazil forward Joao Pedro could feature against Brentford, though there is still uncertainty around his international availability once this club fixture is done. For now, Alonso is shutting out that noise and keeping his eyes on Friday.
He brushed aside talk of call-ups and travel, making it plain that Chelsea’s immediate job takes priority over anything that happens during the break.
