Carrick's Derby Plan Unveiled as United Defeats Sabah 4-0

Manchester United’s return to the Champions League came with a statement scoreline and a few carefully chosen clues about Sunday’s Manchester derby.

United swept aside Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford on Thursday night, with both Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo named in the starting XI. Tielemans played his part in the first-half surge, sliding the assist for Bruno Fernandes to make it 2-0 shortly before the interval as United tightened their grip on the contest.

Benjamin Sesko then added a third before half-time, killing off any lingering jeopardy and putting United in complete control. With the job effectively done by the break, Michael Carrick changed the picture.

Tielemans did not emerge for the second half, replaced by Mason Mount, while Andrey Santos was also introduced as Carrick used the cushion to share minutes around his midfield.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the win, the United head coach made it clear the switches were planned with the bigger picture in mind.

"It's nice as well to be able to get Andrey [Santos] and Mason [Mount] on for the second half," Carrick said, underlining the need to keep his squad sharp as the fixtures stack up.

Derby clues on the bench

The real intrigue, though, sat on the teamsheet rather than the scoresheet.

Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire were all unused substitutes, watching the comfortable victory from the bench. With City arriving at Old Trafford on Sunday, that trio’s preservation felt deliberate, a strong hint that Carrick has them pencilled in for major roles in the derby.

One key name was missing altogether. Luke Shaw did not make the matchday squad after taking a knock in last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Everton, and his status now hangs over United’s derby preparations.

Carrick, speaking to TNT Sports before kick-off, framed Shaw’s absence as precautionary.

"It's a little bit of that [managing him]," he said. "He came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp. We didn't want to take any risks really."

United leave the night with four goals, a clean sheet, and a dressing room largely untouched by fatigue. The scoreline against Sabah will soon fade; the selection calls it allowed Carrick to make could define what happens when City come to town.
