Cardiff City Defender Dylan Lawlor Cleared to Play Against Charlton

Cardiff City have been handed a major defensive lift as they chase their first Championship win of the season, with Wales centre-back Dylan Lawlor cleared to return against Charlton Athletic.

The 20-year-old has not kicked a ball in the 2026-27 campaign because of a knee injury, but is back in contention for Saturday’s lunchtime clash with the Addicks at Cardiff City Stadium (12:30 BST).

“Dylan will definitely be available, he's good to go,” confirmed head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, who is under pressure to turn four draws and three defeats from seven games into something more convincing.

Lawlor has rejoined full training this week alongside fellow centre-back Will Fish. The difference is that only one of them will be seen on the pitch. Fish, who has undergone hernia surgery, will not be risked.

“Will Fish won't be available, he's probably another week behind so we're not going to take any chances, but Dylan's back fully fit,” Barry-Murphy said.

Lawlor’s return comes after a relentless 2025-26 season in which he made 43 appearances for club and country, only to miss out on Wales’ Nations League squad on Tuesday because of the same knee issue that has delayed his Cardiff comeback.

His rise under Barry-Murphy has been sharp. The defender forced his way into the Bluebirds’ side in League One and quickly became a mainstay before this latest setback. Now the manager must decide whether to throw him straight back into the starting XI or ease him in from the bench.

“He's trained really well. We'll see how he is today and tomorrow, then make a decision based on who we feel is best to start this game,” Barry-Murphy explained. “But he's fully fit, with no issues with his knee whatsoever, and he looks great.”

For Cardiff, the timing could hardly be better. Injuries have ripped through their back line, forcing a series of reshuffles and emergency solutions. New signing Krystian Bielik has arrived from West Bromwich Albion, while natural full-backs Perry Ng and Joel Bagan have been pushed into central roles in recent weeks.

Gabriel Osho has also missed games with injury, leaving Barry-Murphy short of specialist centre-backs. Lawlor back on the grass and Fish edging closer changes that picture.

“They're two such outstanding players and to give us that extra depth to our squad that we've lacked in the earliest parts of the season is going to be really important,” the Cardiff boss said. “I'm very pleased to get them back and will try to build them up gradually to make sure that they stay fit, and both players can be very important for us.”

Cardiff’s wider injury list still bites. Wales internationals Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies remain sidelined, as does defender Calum Chambers.

Chambers is dealing with knee, neck and back problems and is due a further scan to determine how long he will be out. Colwill and Davies, though, are edging closer, working their way back from ankle and hamstring issues respectively.

“We expect them to train in the middle of the international break, Rubin and Isaak,” said Barry-Murphy. “Calum Chambers is having a further scan on his injury this afternoon, so we'll know more on the timescale.”

Cardiff go into the weekend still hunting that elusive first league victory. With Lawlor back, Bielik bedding in and more reinforcements on the horizon, the question now is whether this is the moment their season finally starts to move.
