Canadian Wildfires Delay Lewandowski and Müller's Anticipated Reunion

Smoke from Canadian wildfires did what countless defenders once tried and failed to do: it stopped Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller from putting on a show.

Chicago Fire’s home clash with Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field was called off because of hazardous air quality in the area, pushing back Lewandowski’s highly anticipated debut and shelving, for now, his first on‑field reunion with his old Bayern Munich accomplice. Major League Soccer moved quickly, fixing a new date of October 6 for the rescheduled fixture.

So the crowd went without the football. But they still got the storyline.

Instead of combining between the lines, Lewandowski and Müller linked up online. The Polish striker posted a tongue‑in‑cheek message on Instagram: “What a game today! Great to see you, Thomas Müller,” leaning into the absurdity of a marquee night lost to smoke.

Müller, never one to miss a cue, fired back. “The boys are back in town,” he replied on Instagram, then added on X: “Not the meeting we were hoping for but still enjoyable. Always a pleasure @_rl9 - see you again in October !!!”

For Bayern supporters, it was a jolt of nostalgia. For eight seasons, from 2014 to 2022, the pair terrorised Bundesliga defences in a partnership that defined an era in Munich. Müller, the space‑finding schemer, teed up 42 league goals for Lewandowski. The No 9, in turn, plundered 344 goals in all competitions for the German champions, turning their connection into a production line of trophies.

Those days are gone, but the relationship clearly isn’t. Since Lewandowski’s move to Barcelona, their bond has lived on in messages, reunions and now, unexpectedly, in the United States, where they stand on opposite sides as new domestic rivals.

The romance of the reunion now has to give way to reality. Both clubs return to the grind of their MLS campaigns, the postponement an unwelcome break in rhythm as the season tightens.

Vancouver's Challenge

Vancouver, well‑placed in the Western Conference, must hold their nerve. The table is bunching, the margins shrinking, and the Whitecaps’ recent form has given them a platform they cannot afford to waste.

Chicago's Challenge

Chicago’s challenge is different but just as delicate. Fire’s coaching staff now have to recalibrate Lewandowski’s launch. His debut has been delayed, not derailed, and the next training sessions become a balancing act: keep his conditioning high, sharpen his timing, but avoid overloading a striker who has built a career on peaking on the right nights.

The smoke has cleared the stage for now. When October 6 finally arrives, will it be another nostalgic reunion, or the first chapter of a very modern MLS rivalry between two old Bayern allies?
