Arsenal Targets Konsa Amid Saliba Injury Concerns
Arsenal’s summer had been mapped out with precision. Then William Saliba walked off in a World Cup semi-final, clutching his back, and the plan suddenly needed a rewrite.
The France defender has been managing a back issue for weeks and was forced off during his country’s defeat in the last four. The extent of the problem is still being assessed, and it remains unclear whether he will need a spell on the sidelines. For a club built on the stability of its centre-backs, that uncertainty bites.
So Arsenal have moved quickly. Ezri Konsa, long admired across the league, is again on their radar. According to The Guardian, the Gunners have formally expressed interest in the Aston Villa and England defender, viewing him as a potential solution if Saliba’s situation worsens – or as heavyweight competition in a season that will demand depth as much as quality.
Konsa is not the only Villa player in Arsenal’s sights. Morgan Rogers, his club and international team-mate, is also expected to be the subject of a bid. The 23-year-old attacker has been high on Arsenal’s list for some time, and with his World Cup campaign winding down, the London club are preparing to move. The timing is deliberate: act before the market fully erupts.
On the flanks, the picture is even clearer. Arsenal have agreed a deal to bring in Club Brugge winger Cristos Tzolis, with the move edging closer to completion. It is the kind of signing that hints at a more varied attacking palette – another wide option to stretch defences and protect key starters across a long season.
Yet Arsenal are not shopping in a quiet market. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has once again underlined his determination to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, a player Arsenal also admire. Any pursuit of the Argentine would be a straight fight with one of Europe’s biggest institutions, and Laporta’s repeated public stance is a reminder that nothing at the top end of the window comes uncontested.
While Arsenal weigh up how bold to be, Aston Villa are reshaping their own squad. They are closing in on Joao Gomes from Wolves in a deal worth around £38m, a move that would add bite and energy to their midfield. Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa have also agreed personal terms with AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan, signalling a serious attempt to upgrade their options on the left side of defence.
The rest of the Premier League is hardly standing still. Nottingham Forest are preparing a £45m bid for Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall after an initial offer was rejected, according to BBC Sport. Forest still want another midfielder on top of Bergvall, a statement of intent from a club refusing to tread water.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are working on a different problem: the goalkeeping department. Talks are under way over deals for Brighton’s Carl Rushworth and Manchester City’s James Trafford, The Daily Mail report, as they look to lock down the position for both the present and the future.
Back in north London, everything loops back to Saliba. His back, his fitness, his availability. Arsenal’s interest in Konsa, their push for Rogers and Tzolis, and their watchful stance on Alvarez all feed into one question: can they build a squad robust enough to withstand the kind of shock that arrived in that World Cup semi-final?
