Transfer Market Insights: Premier League Clubs Gear Up for New Season

The World Cup is edging towards its climax, and the transfer market is behaving exactly as you’d expect: impatient, expensive and utterly relentless.

Across England’s elite, plans that have been months in the making are now being dragged into the open. Some clubs are ripping up midfields. Others are gambling on teenagers. One is trying to work out what life looks like after Mohamed Salah.

Arsenal load up for life after Trossard

At Arsenal, the picture is clear: Mikel Arteta wants more firepower and more flexibility across the front line.

Leandro Trossard has gone, and the Gunners have moved quickly. A deal has been agreed for Christos Tzolis, the gifted wide forward whose end product has finally started to match the early hype. Arsenal are now preparing a bid for Morgan Rogers, another versatile attacker who fits the club’s preference for players who can shift across multiple positions in the final third.

That is only part of a broader, aggressive push.

Bruno Guimaraes remains a major midfield target, a statement signing if they can pull it off. Julian Alvarez is still on the list as a potential game-changer in attack, while teenage talent Andria Bartishvili has been flagged as one for the future. Bradley Barcola and Ezri Konsa are also firmly on the radar, hinting at a squad being built to compete on all fronts, with depth in both creativity and defensive security.

Arsenal are not tinkering. They are trying to jump a level.

Manchester United rip up the midfield plan

Over at Old Trafford, the rebuild under Michael Carrick has shifted into overdrive.

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have already arrived for a combined fee of around £85m, but United are not slowing down. The midfield that has stuttered and stalled in recent seasons is being torn apart and reassembled.

Manu Kone, the France star long admired across Europe, is firmly in their sights. United have also registered interest in Hugo Larsson, the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder tied down until 2029, and Nico Raskin, who has impressed with Rangers and enjoyed a strong World Cup with Belgium.

It will take serious money to prise Larsson away from Frankfurt, who hold all the cards contractually. Yet United have already made contact with his camp, and Newcastle are lurking in the background.

Raskin, by contrast, would be a more left-field move. Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant report that both United and Aston Villa are tracking him closely. It underlines how deep United are digging in their search for the right blend in the middle of the park.

There is another subplot: Marcus Rashford’s £40m exit clause has now expired. For the first time in a while, United can plan without that particular cloud hanging over them.

Liverpool lock in Szoboszlai and brace for the Salah call

At Liverpool, one big decision has been made. Another, even bigger, is looming.

Dominik Szoboszlai has agreed a huge new contract, a three-year extension that will keep him at Anfield until 2031 and elevate him to one of the club’s top earners. After a standout 2025/26 campaign and that flashpoint moment when he sarcastically applauded the fans following the FA Cup quarter-final hammering by Manchester City, his future had been the subject of speculation. Real Madrid were among the clubs circling.

Liverpool have shut that door decisively. Szoboszlai is now a pillar of the next era.

The same certainty does not yet exist with Mohamed Salah.

The club legend is a free agent after leaving Anfield last month, his nine-year spell over but his next destination still unknown. Saudi Arabia and MLS clubs are circling, but nothing is signed.

His agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, broke the silence this morning. “We still do not know where Mohamed will play next season but we may know very soon,” he wrote, adding that they do not speak to clubs Salah would never consider “just for the sake of noise.”

While the football world waits, Liverpool are already acting as if they must replace him.

Under new head coach Andoni Iraola, they have made Adam Wharton their “top target” this window, according to Football Transfers. The Crystal Palace and England midfielder fits the profile of a long-term engine-room leader. Liverpool have also made contact with Bournemouth over Brazilian winger Rayan, per TEAMtalk, a player Iraola knows well from his previous job.

They have already brought in Victor Munoz from Osasuna and are still pushing for Bradley Barcola. Yan Diomande, once a leading candidate for the wide role, is now expected to join Paris Saint-Germain.

The shape of Liverpool’s next front line will depend on one thing: where Salah chooses to play.

Chelsea bet big on youth and weigh defensive exits

Chelsea’s obsession with youth is not slowing down.

The club are about to welcome Brazilian left-back Denner from Corinthians, a deal agreed last year that will finally be completed this summer. The teenager, who turned 18 in February and has been recovering from a knee injury, is due in west London next week for a medical and to finalise his move.

He is expected to sign a contract running until 2032. A decade-long bet on potential.

Chelsea are also trying to strike a deal for Pep Chavarria, while keeping one eye on Manu Kone, with the Frenchman potentially becoming a battleground with Manchester United if Enzo Fernandez moves on.

At the back, there is a key decision to make on Mamadou Sarr. The 20-year-old former Strasbourg captain is admired by new head coach Xabi Alonso, but the club are leaning towards sending him on loan to a Premier League side to accelerate his development. Several other options exist abroad, and Chelsea have not fully ruled out keeping him in-house. Alonso will sit down with Sarr before a final call is made.

This is squad-building on a grand scale, but the pathway for young defenders will need to be crystal clear.

Tottenham look to add star power as Forest push for Bergvall

Tottenham’s recruitment team are aiming high.

Savinho, Rafael Leao and Cody Gakpo are all on their list, a trio that screams ambition and attacking flair. Landing any one of them would reshape Ange Postecoglou’s front line and send a message about where Spurs believe they belong.

While they dream big, the market around them keeps moving. Nottingham Forest are preparing a second offer for Lucas Bergvall, a player who has attracted attention from several top clubs. Forest, though, are refusing to back off, sensing an opportunity to steal a march.

Tottenham, as ever, must decide how bold they want to be.

Villa move for Estupinan as Milan eye Mazraoui reunion

Aston Villa are quietly putting together another smart window.

They have agreed personal terms with Pervis Estupinan, according to Fabrizio Romano, with negotiations ongoing with AC Milan over a transfer fee. Estupinan is lined up as the replacement for Lucas Digne, whose time at Villa Park appears to be nearing its end.

That move has a knock-on effect in Italy.

Ruben Amorim, now in charge at Milan, wants Noussair Mazraoui as Estupinan’s replacement. The two worked together at Manchester United and Amorim is keen on a reunion in Serie A, seeing the full-back as a perfect fit for his system.

The chain reaction is already in motion. One left-back out, another right-back in, and two clubs trying to keep their tactical shapes intact.

The window is only just warming up. Contracts are being signed, exit clauses are expiring, and some of the game’s biggest names are hovering between eras.

The next decisive call belongs to Mohamed Salah.
