Caicedo Still Out as Chelsea Prepares for Leeds Cup Tie
Chelsea head into their Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United on Wednesday night without Moises Caicedo once again. No smokescreen, no late fitness test drama. He is not ready, Chelsea accept it, and Xabi Alonso refuses to roll the dice.
Caicedo sat out the first two games of the season, then lasted just 14 minutes against Brighton before limping off. He missed the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal as well, and Chelsea have chosen the slow, careful path. Alonso has been clear: there will be no gamble and no repeat of what he called “the same mistake”.
The only comfort is that the problem is not considered “longer-term”. That might help the mood around Cobham, but it does nothing for Chelsea’s options against Leeds. Caicedo is out. So is Marco Palestra. Jordan Henderson is still sidelined with the wrist injury he picked up at the World Cup, and Emmanuel Emegha will also sit this one out.
Alonso Draws a Line on Risk
Alonso did not bother hiding his frustration over Palestra’s timing, but he did not dress it up either. Chelsea rate the player highly; they just have to wait.
“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”
The message sits at the heart of Chelsea’s approach right now. Early-season injuries sting, particularly for new arrivals trying to make an impression, but this is not the stage of the campaign to be rushing anyone back for a domestic cup tie.
Rotation on the Cards, But Cup Not an Afterthought
Saturday’s league game at home to Hull City carries more weight in the bigger picture, so changes are expected. Alonso will shuffle his pack, but not throw it in the air.
Levi Colwill, left out against Arsenal with a minor fitness concern, is back in full training and available. Mike Penders is in line to start in goal, while Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are both pushing for places from the first whistle.
A likely Chelsea XI against Leeds shapes up as: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.
No fresh doubts have emerged. The injury list is clear and blunt:
- Out: Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, Emegha.
- Doubts: none.
Chelsea vs Leeds kicks off at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9 at Stamford Bridge. Alonso will rotate, but he will not weaken the intent. The balance is simple: treat the cup run with respect, without losing sight of a league campaign that may define how bold he can afford to be for the rest of the season.
