Cagliari’s Young Hope Trepy Leaves Hospital After Near-Fatal Accident
Cagliari can finally exhale. So can Yael Trepy.
The young French striker has been discharged from the "Santissima Annunziata" University Hospital of Sassari, closing the most frightening chapter of his life after a swimming pool accident that almost killed him and threatened to end his career before it had even begun.
On 16 August, during a holiday at a villa in the Baja Sardinia area near the Costa Smeralda, Trepy nearly drowned in a pool. What was meant to be a quiet summer break turned, in an instant, into a desperate fight for survival. Emergency services reacted with speed and precision, airlifting him to Sassari. Without that response, doctors admit, the consequences could have been catastrophic.
He was taken straight into intensive care and placed in a medically induced coma for 48 hours. Those two days felt like an eternity for his family, his club, and supporters following every update. When he finally woke, the first real wave of relief swept through Cagliari.
From there, the climb back began.
Trepy was transferred to the pulmonology ward, where doctors monitored his lungs and overall condition. The key news came quietly but decisively: no major physical damage. Step by step, his recovery gathered pace, the danger gradually receding.
Professor Pietro Pirina, director of the department of clinical and interventional pulmonology at Sassari University Hospital, summed up the medical team’s work in a statement to "Sky Sport": “The patient is leaving hospital in a generally good clinical condition, after a course of treatment that showed a gradual and marked recovery.”
He underlined that the improvement was steady and measurable: “The tests carried out during his stay in hospital showed an improvement in his condition, which allowed us to plan his discharge from hospital with peace of mind. If some have spoken in recent days of a miracle, we prefer to speak of the work of a system that has proven its effectiveness.”
No magic. Just a chain that held firm when it mattered most.
When Trepy finally stepped out of hospital, he did so with a broad smile, his mother at his side. He took time to say goodbye to the medical staff, the general director and the medical director – the people who had watched over him at his most vulnerable.
The story now moves north.
Trepy will continue his rehabilitation in Arco, in the province of Trento, where a structured programme awaits him. There, specialists will guide the next phase of his recovery, building back strength and resilience after the trauma.
Only after further detailed tests will doctors decide whether he can be cleared to return to competition. The question hanging in the air is no longer “Will he live?” but “When will he be ready to play again?”
