Bruno Guimaraes Set for First Arsenal Start Against Manchester City
Bruno Guimaraes is poised for his first Arsenal start – and it could come on one of English football’s showpiece stages.
The Brazilian midfielder, used only off the bench in the Gunners’ final pre-season outing against Como in midweek, is in contention to go straight into Mikel Arteta’s XI for the Community Shield clash with Manchester City in Cardiff.
Big guns return for Arsenal
Arsenal’s preparations have been disjointed by late returns, but the cavalry is finally back. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are all set to rejoin the squad after missing the entirety of pre-season so far.
None of the trio has played a single minute this summer, having only resumed training at the start of the week following extended post-World Cup breaks. The club eased them back in, but the intensity has ramped up at the training ground over the past few days and the plan is clear: get them on the pitch against City.
“They will be available,” Arteta confirmed in his pre-match press conference. “They trained with us today, they will train tomorrow. If they are in the condition we expect them to be, they will be involved.”
The message is optimistic, but not reckless. Arsenal are expected to manage their minutes carefully, which opens the door for Guimaraes to anchor the midfield from the start.
Guimaraes and the new engine room
With Saka, Rice and Zubimendi likely to be eased in, Guimaraes is in line to start alongside Myles Lewis-Skelly, the academy product who has quietly become a constant presence. Lewis-Skelly started every pre-season match and has earned Arteta’s trust in the middle of the park.
If Guimaraes does get the nod, it would give Arsenal a new look at the base of midfield in a game that often sets the tone for the season. The Brazilian’s composure on the ball and bite in the challenge could be central to how Arsenal try to disrupt City’s rhythm.
Defensive reshuffle continues
At the back, Arsenal are still without Jurrien Timber and William Saliba. Their absence keeps the reshuffle going, with Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera expected to start on the right side of the defence.
David Raya should continue in goal, with Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori likely completing the back four. It’s not the first-choice defensive unit Arteta imagined for this point in August, but it has been drilled through pre-season and now faces the ultimate early test.
Tzolis makes his case
On the flanks, there is a genuine selection dilemma. Christos Tzolis has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers this summer, catching the eye with sharp movement and end product. He has pushed himself firmly into the conversation for a starting spot.
Gabriel Martinelli, meanwhile, finds himself under a different kind of spotlight, with the Brazilian forward continuing to be linked with a move to Turkey. That uncertainty hands Tzolis a real chance to seize the left-wing role at Wembley’s curtain-raiser equivalent in Cardiff.
In the No10 role, Martin Odegaard remains the creative heartbeat, while young winger Ethan Nwaneri Dowman is tipped to feature in the attacking line behind the striker after a busy pre-season.
Up front, the pattern under Arteta is familiar. When the games feel big, Kai Havertz is often the man trusted to lead the line, and that is expected to be the case again.
