Bruno Guimaraes on Arsenal's Bench Against Sunderland

Bruno Guimaraes returns to the bench for Arsenal tonight as Mikel Arteta’s side head to Sunderland for Premier League duty, with the spotlight fixed firmly on the £75million summer signing.

The midfielder’s start to life in north London has stuttered rather than surged, minor injury problems slowing the rhythm Arsenal hoped he would instantly bring to their engine room. He did finally get back on the pitch in midweek, stepping off the bench in the Champions League win over Napoli, but Arteta has decided to hold him in reserve again on Wearside.

If he does get on, he knows exactly what awaits. Guimaraes, once Newcastle’s captain and talisman, is unlikely to hear many friendly voices inside the Stadium of Light. The hostility will be loud, and it will be personal.

While Guimaraes waits, others step forward. Christos Tzolis and Kai Havertz are both restored to the starting XI after cameo roles in Wednesday’s tight 1-0 victory in Naples during the league phase. Arteta leans back into them from the first whistle, trusting fresh legs and familiar patterns to carry the early tempo.

There is another significant name back in the frame. Jurrien Timber is included in a Premier League matchday squad for the first time since his injury in March, a long, frustrating spell that has tested both player and staff. He travelled with the group to Italy in midweek as his recovery ramped up, but stayed out of the squad against Napoli. Tonight, he steps a little closer to the pitch again.

Not everyone is on the mend. Mosquera misses out once more, still sidelined after a muscle issue picked up in the win over Aston Villa, an injury that has already kept him out of the last two matches and stretches his absence further.

At the back, Arsenal continue to plan without William Saliba. The defender faces an extended spell out after aggravating a long-standing back problem while on World Cup duty with France earlier in the summer. He has at least avoided surgery, but that offers little comfort on nights like this, when the team sheet goes up and his name is nowhere to be seen.
