Brown Bears Dominate but Settle for Draw Against Rhode Island
KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown dominated almost everything but the scoreboard.
The Bears poured pressure on Rhode Island from the opening whistle Thursday night, outshooting the Rams 17–3 and piling up 10 shots on target, yet walked away from the URI Soccer Complex with only a 1–1 draw to show for it.
Vargas strikes early, Bears take control
The breakthrough came quickly. With Brown already pinning URI deep, Kyra Treanor broke her defender down the right flank in the 12th minute and whipped a ball across the face of goal. Waiting inside the six-yard box, senior forward Angelina Vargas didn’t hesitate. One clean strike, and the ball was buried.
It was Vargas’ third goal of the season and the sixth of her career, Treanor’s second assist of the year, and it felt like the start of a long night for the Rams.
Brown kept coming.
Vargas tested the keeper again just two minutes later. Senior forward Joy Okonye forced another save in the 25th minute. Moments after that, senior Corine Gregory added to the barrage with a shot on target in the 26th, and sophomore Jael‑Marie Guy drove one on frame in the 33rd.
By halftime, the numbers told the story of near-total control: 11–1 in shots, 7–1 in shots on goal, 5–2 in corner kicks. Vargas had already racked up four shots and three on target. Okonye added three efforts, two of them on goal. The only thing missing was a second goal to match the performance.
Behind them, Brown’s back line of Treanor, senior Claire Silverman, junior Chesney Robinson, and junior Brooke Birtwistle locked in and stayed there. All four went the full 90 minutes, giving up almost nothing from open play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter had little to do in the opening 45. She would be called on later.
Rams hit back, Bears denied late winner
Rhode Island hung around, and that mattered.
Just past the hour mark, the rhythm of the match shifted. In the 68th minute, the Rams finally carved out a chance inside the penalty area. Megan Steinbach pounced and leveled the match at 1–1, punishing one of the few lapses Brown allowed all night. Etter finished with one save, but the equalizer stood.
The goal jolted URI. In the 83rd minute, the hosts came within inches of stealing all three points, rattling a shot off the crossbar as Brown briefly wobbled.
Then the Bears pushed back.
With the clock ticking down, Brown hemmed the Rams in again, winning corner kicks in the 87th and 88th minutes. The pressure nearly paid off at the death: in the 90th minute, Guy fired another shot on target, forcing a final save and ending any hope of a late winner.
Okonye closed the night with game highs in both shots (six) and shots on goal (four). Vargas and Guy each added four shots, combining for five more efforts on frame. Brown finished with a 10–4 edge in corners and a lopsided advantage in every attacking metric but the one that decides matches.
Unbeaten in Rhode Island, eyes on Hofstra
The draw moves Brown to 4–2–1 and extends its unbeaten run to three matches (2–0–1). The Bears also remain perfect in the state of Rhode Island this season at 4–0–1, including a 4–0–0 mark at home.
Rhode Island, now 2–3–3, will feel relieved. Brown will feel something closer to frustration.
Next up, the Bears head to Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. for their final non-league road test of the season. With performances like this one, the question isn’t whether Brown can create chances away from home.
It’s whether they’ll start turning nights of dominance into the kind of ruthless scorelines their play deserves.
