Brian Fariñas and the Impact of De Jong's Injury on Barça Future

Brian Fariñas has been one of the unexpected headlines of Hansi Flick’s first pre-season at Barcelona. He arrived as another academy hopeful. He now leaves pre-season as a genuine first-team option – but with his fate tied to a very different story: Frenkie de Jong’s knee.

Flick blocks Girona – and gets his answer

Before a ball was kicked this summer, Barcelona had an agreement in place for Fariñas to join Girona. A logical step, a classic pathway: minutes, La Liga experience, less pressure.

Flick stopped it.

The new Barça coach wanted to see the midfielder up close before signing off on any move. That decision has aged well. Fariñas has impressed the staff, earned Flick’s trust and turned himself from a name on the squad list into a real candidate for the senior setup.

He has done it the hard way too, by showing he can live in several roles across the pitch. Across pre-season, Fariñas has operated as a defensive midfielder, as a more traditional central midfielder and pushed higher between the lines. Flick even pushed the youngster out to right-back against Birmingham, a test of both discipline and adaptability. It worked. That versatility is now one of his biggest selling points inside the dressing room.

He has gone from “let’s have a look at him” to “we can use this player”.

Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo, have already ruled out one option: sending him back to the reserve team. That door is shut. The choice is now sharper, and far more interesting: stay with Flick’s first team, or revive the Girona loan that was once agreed.

A breakthrough – but no guarantees

Winning over a coach is one thing. Winning minutes at Barcelona is another.

Fariñas has convinced Flick he belongs around the senior squad. That does not automatically translate into regular game time in a midfield already packed with profiles and egos. The club knows that leaving him without rhythm on the bench could stall his progress, which is why the Girona route remains alive.

And yet, the final call might not come down to Fariñas, Flick or Girona. It might come down to Frenkie de Jong’s right knee.

De Jong’s knee, Fariñas’ future

Inside the club, De Jong’s recovery has become a central factor in the Fariñas debate.

The Dutch midfielder is still working his way back from a rupture of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury suffered during the World Cup. He has opted for conservative treatment, avoiding the operating table for now, but surgery has not been completely ruled out if the recovery stalls.

Barcelona are watching closely. Every update on De Jong’s condition has a ripple effect on the rest of the midfield – and on one 19-year-old trying to break through.

If De Jong is ruled out for a longer spell, the logic is clear: Fariñas stays. With the reserve-team option already discarded, keeping him with Flick’s squad would give Barcelona another flexible body in the middle of the pitch, someone who already understands the system and has shown he can cover multiple roles.

If De Jong progresses well and returns on schedule, the equation changes. Minutes in a crowded midfield become harder to promise, and the Girona loan starts to look like the best route for his development again.

For now, Fariñas finds himself in a strange limbo. He has done his part, impressed his coach and earned a place in the conversation. Yet his next step will not be dictated purely by his own performances or by Girona’s interest.

It will be decided on a treatment table, by the pace of a senior star’s recovery and by how Barcelona choose to balance present needs with the future of one of La Masia’s latest climbers.
