Bayern Munich Boosted as Jamal Musiala Returns to Squad

Bayern Munich are about to get their conductor back.

Jamal Musiala has been named in the travelling squad for Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena, a key step in his return after a worrying spell on the sidelines. The 23-year-old has yet to play a competitive minute this season, having missed Bayern’s first three league fixtures of the 2026-27 campaign while undergoing intensive medical checks and tailored training.

For a side already eyeing another title charge, his presence on the plane alone feels significant.

Kompany ready to unleash his star – cautiously

Vincent Kompany has made it clear: Musiala is close.

The Bayern coach confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Friday that the playmaker is on the verge of a full comeback, with the final call hinging on how he comes through the last training session before the Schalke clash.

“He’s had a good, full week of training. Things are looking up for him, he’s doing well. We’ve already explained how we’re handling this. Jamal is in a good phase right now. We’ve been dealing with the situation for a while now,” Kompany said, outlining the club’s careful approach.

The staff will not rush it. Not now.

“We’ll see how he is in training today and then make the decision that’s best for Jamal and the team. Today we will make a decision with Jamal with regards to how he handles the training session. Serge Gnabry will not be available this week, hopefully next week. The main priority is that he feels well.”

So Musiala waits for the final green light. Gnabry, by contrast, is ruled out, leaving even more weight on Musiala’s eventual shoulders once he is fully back.

Confronting the neurological scare

Musiala’s absence has not been the usual muscle strain or routine knock. It has been far more unsettling.

During the summer, the attacking midfielder collapsed in a friendly against 1. FC Heidenheim, a moment that sent a jolt through the club and the wider game. It was not the first time: he had previously gone down during a Telekom Cup match against RB Leipzig.

The incidents demanded answers. Musiala later chose to address the issue himself, explaining that he had been diagnosed with brief, temporary but easily treatable episodes of absence, linked to a neurological dysfunction.

Kompany has leaned into transparency. He has consistently stressed that Bayern’s medical department is fully prepared to manage any future episodes, trying to strip away the sense of drama and fear surrounding the condition.

In a recent briefing, he even downplayed the potential impact of a recurrence, both publicly and internally. If Musiala were to collapse again, Kompany insisted, it would no longer trigger panic.

“If it does happen again in 40, 50, 60 days’ time or in 40, 50, 60 games’ time, then it’s no longer a big deal for us. We know how to deal with it and some stage he’s just going to be a totally normal athlete again,” he said.

The message is deliberate: Bayern will protect him, but they will also treat him as a footballer first, not a medical case.

Bayern eye congested calendar with Musiala back in the frame

The timing of his return could hardly be more important.

As the Bundesliga schedule starts to tighten and European nights loom, Bayern need every angle of Kompany’s tactical playbook. Musiala, with his ability to drift between the lines, quicken the tempo and unlock deep blocks, is central to that.

He has already been officially registered in Bayern’s Champions League squad for the upcoming tie against Bodo/Glimt, another sign of the club’s confidence in his progress and his role in the weeks ahead.

Kompany now stands on the brink of having his most gifted creator back just as the season begins to accelerate. How quickly Musiala can move from travelling squad member to decisive match-winner may shape the early contours of Bayern’s campaign.
