Barcelona Targets Julián Álvarez with €90m Bid
FC Barcelona have moved from admiration to action in their pursuit of Julián Álvarez, with sporting director Deco sitting down face to face with the striker’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, on Wednesday in a decisive step in the chase.
The European champions are no longer just sounding out the market. They are preparing a formal opening offer for the 26-year-old Atlético Madrid forward, a move that will test both their finances and Atlético’s resolve.
A bid near the limit
Barcelona’s first proposal, according to reports in SPORT, is expected to come in at around €90 million plus performance-related bonuses.
That figure is not random. It sits just below the internal ceiling the club had set for a marquee No. 9 this summer: €100 million, all-in. Cross that line and the operation starts to collide with the harsh realities of La Liga’s financial controls and Barça’s own recovery plan.
Even with that, nobody at the club expects a quick agreement. This is not Anthony Gordon, not a deal that can be pushed through in a few days with a willing seller. Atlético Madrid are demanding a huge fee for the Argentina international and have no intention of making his exit painless.
On top of that, the competition is real. PSG are described as determined to go after Álvarez, and Arsenal remain in the background, tracking every development and ready to move if the door opens.
Pressure on the player
Inside Barcelona, the feeling is that the last few weeks have changed the tone of the operation.
In talks with Álvarez’s camp, the Catalan club stressed a clear message: if he truly wants to wear the Barça shirt, he needs to show it. Not in public statements or social media hints, but in the kind of private gestures that leave his current club in no doubt about his preferred destination.
They wanted Atlético to understand that, when the offers arrive, Álvarez’s priority is Barcelona, even with PSG’s money and Arsenal’s project on the table.
Within the corridors of power at the club, there is now a belief that this signal has already been sent. The player’s stance, they feel, is leaning firmly towards Camp Nou.
Flick’s long game
This is not a last-minute scramble or a reaction to another club’s move. Hansi Flick has been speaking directly with Álvarez on several occasions, outlining his plans and the role he envisions for him in a new-look Barcelona attack.
At the same time, Deco has kept an open line with the forward’s representatives since before the beginning of 2026, treating the operation as a long-term strategic target rather than a market bargain.
That level of persistence underlines how Barcelona view Álvarez: not as a convenient option if other deals fall through, but as a cornerstone signing, central to their sporting project over the coming years.
Money, resistance and a long summer ahead
For all the optimism about the player’s willingness, the numbers remain the biggest stumbling block. Atlético are under no pressure to sell and are not expected to soften their stance just because Álvarez likes the idea of Barcelona.
Barça, though, have decided to stay in the fight. The opening bid of around €90 million plus add-ons will only be the start of a long negotiation, one that will likely stretch deep into the window and test how far the Catalan club are prepared — and allowed — to go.
They know it will not be easy. They know it will not be fast. But they also know that if they want a striker to define the next era, this is the kind of battle they have to be willing to see through to the very end.
