Youri Tielemans Addresses Aston Villa Fans After Manchester United Move

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to calm anger among Aston Villa supporters after describing Manchester United as “a club above” his former side.

The Belgium midfielder, 29, left Villa Park for Old Trafford this summer after United activated a £35m release clause in his contract, handing him a five-year deal. His departure ended a three-year spell in Birmingham, where he arrived from Leicester City in 2023, played 134 games and scored 10 goals.

On United’s pre-season tour, Tielemans had initially spoken warmly about his time at Villa, crediting the club with reviving his career and “putting me back to my best level”. Then came the line that lit the fuse.

“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them,” he said.

The comment landed badly with sections of the Villa fanbase, who felt slighted after backing him through a successful spell under Unai Emery. Reaction on social media was swift, with some supporters accusing him of disrespecting a club that had helped restore his reputation.

Tielemans responded less than 24 hours later. Turning to Instagram to address the backlash, he attempted to draw a line under the row and acknowledge his misstep.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote on Thursday.

“I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.

“Wishing the club the best in the future.”

The move to United is a significant step in Tielemans’ career, but his rapid apology underlines how little margin there is for error once a transfer crosses Premier League battle lines. One sentence was enough to turn a fond farewell into a minor storm. Now his task is clear: win over a new crowd at Old Trafford, without losing the respect of the one he left behind.
