Barcelona Confirms Offer for Julian Alvarez Amid Transfer Speculation

Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste has lifted the lid on one of the summer’s worst-kept secrets: the club did make an offer for Julian Alvarez.

He stopped there. No figures, no contract details, no talk of how close – or how far – a deal might be. But the admission alone was enough to ignite a transfer story already simmering between two La Liga rivals.

Yuste admits bid, but walks transfer tightrope

Speaking to TV3 after Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy outing, Yuste was pressed on the club’s interest in the Atletico Madrid forward. Alvarez has been strongly linked with a move to Catalonia, even as Atletico hold the line that the Argentine is not for sale.

Reports have suggested Alvarez wants to leave Atletico Madrid, while Barcelona weigh up their attacking options for the new season. The ingredients for a saga are all there. Yuste chose his words carefully.

He refused to delve into negotiations or the player’s wishes, keen not to inflame what is already a delicate situation between two clubs who know each other well on and off the pitch.

“I don’t like to talk about players who aren’t ours. We’ve had a very good relationship with Miguel Ángel Gil and President Cerezo for years and years, and so these are things that I would say are part and parcel of football.

“We must maintain decorum and let common sense prevail,” he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

The message was clear: respect first, headlines second.

Yuste did not reveal whether Barcelona’s proposal for Alvarez is still on the table or if a fresh approach is being lined up. The uncertainty hangs there, unresolved. Then came the key line.

“We made an offer and that’s that,” he confirmed.

No denial. No attempt to downplay it. Just a blunt acknowledgment that Barcelona have already made their move for the Argentine.

Focus back on Hansi Flick’s debut campaign

From there, Yuste steered the conversation away from the transfer market and back onto the pitch. He echoed Hansi Flick’s stance that the squad must concentrate on the immediate task: starting La Liga with a win.

“We must focus entirely on what Hansi said recently: that we have a match on Sunday and we have to go out and win it.

“There are 38 matches in La Liga and each one is worth three points, so we’re fully focused on trying to secure our first win,” Yuste added.

The subtext is obvious. While the club explores opportunities like Alvarez, Flick’s Barcelona cannot afford to drift into the season distracted by speculation.

Window still open, Barcelona still active

Yuste also made it clear that Barcelona are not done in the market. The door remains open for more arrivals before the window shuts, with the sporting department still working in the background.

He highlighted the efforts behind the deal for Rodri and underlined the structure now in place around recruitment.

“We have a great technical team, with Deco, Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría, who is also doing an exceptional job, and the transfer window is still open.”

The message to the supporters is unmistakable: the club are active, the machinery is turning, and opportunities will be taken if they fit both the squad and the finances.

Barcelona have put their cards on the table with Alvarez. Atletico Madrid have made their stance just as clear. With the season about to start and the clock ticking on the window, the question now is simple: who blinks first?
