Ballinora's Championship Hopes Dashed by Munster Council Ruling

Ballinora’s last hope of rescuing their season through the boardroom is gone.

Their appeal to the Munster Council over last week’s decision to award their McCarthy Insurance Group PIFC Group 3 Round 3 tie to Fermoy was rejected on Monday night, closing the door on any replay and confirming their exit from the championship.

The ruling upholds the correction made last Tuesday to the Glenville fixture, where a scoring error in referee Wayne King’s report had originally left the game down as a 0-21 to 2-15 draw. Once reviewed, the result was amended to a 0-22 to 2-15 win for Fermoy.

That single point has changed everything.

Video footage showed that a 30th‑minute point from Ben Twomey, and a subsequent two‑point effort from the same player, were not fully reflected in the half‑time score. Fermoy should have gone in at the break on 0-10 instead of the recorded 0-9.

Ballinora had led 2-7 to 0-9 at half‑time on the original report. When the tally was corrected, the knock‑on effect pushed Fermoy one point clear by the final whistle — enough to send them through and knock Ballinora out of the knockout race.

The decision sparked anger in Ballinora. The club issued a statement last week expressing “huge disappointment” and claiming “the rules of fair play” had not been applied. They pledged to “fully consider” their position, and they did.

They contacted Fermoy directly to seek a replay. Fermoy declined, opting to stand by the official post‑match awarding of the game.

That left the Munster Council as Ballinora’s final avenue. Monday night’s verdict closed that route too, cementing Fermoy’s progression to the quarter‑finals, where they will face Rockchapel. The other quarter‑final pits Macroom against Naomh Abán.

Both ties are fixed for Sunday, with Fermoy now moving on and Ballinora left to count the cost of a clerical error they could not overturn.

It caps a bruising spell for the club. Their drive for a six‑in‑a‑row MJK Oils Muskerry JAHC title also ended at the group stage, after a winner‑takes‑all defeat to Grenagh on Sunday.

Two campaigns, both cut short. The question now is how Ballinora respond when the next one starts.
