Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a statement win and a familiar warning.

The football was sharp, the finishing ruthless. The injury bulletin, less so.

Guimaraes scare tempers bright start

Bruno Guimaraes, the £75million summer arrival from Newcastle, had already offered a glimpse of why Arsenal pushed so hard to get him. He played the first half of the Community Shield against Manchester City, dictating the tempo as the Gunners cruised to a 3-0 win.

Then came the image that jarred with the mood: the Brazilian on the bench after the break, ice strapped to his right thigh. Social media did the rest. Fears of a muscle tear. Talk of weeks out. A cloud over an otherwise dominant afternoon at Wembley.

Those concerns grew when Guimaraes was left out entirely against Coventry. No place in the squad. No late cameo. Just questions.

Mikel Arteta moved quickly to shut down the idea of a long absence.

“No, no, no,” he insisted when asked if Guimaraes could miss weeks. “We expect that not to be weeks at all. Let's see how he evolves this week. He didn't even want to stop. He wanted to carry on.

“Now we start to understand the character of the player, but I don't expect that to be a big issue.”

The message is clear: precaution, not panic. Arsenal will monitor him closely in the coming days, but the club expect him to be back in the fold sooner rather than later, with Villa Park already circled as a potential return.

Timber still counting down the weeks

Jurrien Timber’s story is more complicated. Barring a brief substitute outing in the Champions League final, his year has been wrecked by a groin injury suffered in March.

The setback cost him a place at the World Cup. The defender then underwent minor surgery in the summer and has been locked into a careful recovery plan ever since. Arsenal are not rushing this one.

Arteta’s latest word on Timber, delivered before the Coventry game, was blunt enough.

“I said in the next few weeks,” he reminded reporters, underlining that the Dutchman is not expected to feature before the end of the month.

For a player whose versatility and composure were meant to be central to this season’s plans, it is a frustrating delay. For Arsenal, it is a puzzle they have had to solve in the transfer market.

Saliba blow forces Konsa move

Timber is not the only defender missing. William Saliba’s back injury has reshaped Arsenal’s summer.

The Frenchman faces a lengthy spell out, a serious enough issue to prompt the club into action and accelerate the move for Ezri Konsa, who arrived from Aston Villa in a £55million deal.

Arsenal confirmed last month that Saliba will avoid the operating table, but that doesn’t mean a quick turnaround.

“Specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation,” read the club’s statement.

“Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.”

No surgery is a relief. The timeline, though, remains deliberately vague. Arsenal know they cannot gamble with a back problem of this nature.

Konsa’s arrival is the direct consequence. The England international could make his debut back at Villa Park on Monday, a neat twist to a move born out of necessity as much as ambition.

So Arsenal travel to Birmingham with three storylines running alongside their title defence.

• A marquee midfielder racing to prove his fitness.
• A key defender on a slow, careful path back.
