Through the middle, Viktor Gyokeres is in line for his first start of the season if Arsenal decide to manage Kai Havertz’s minutes. That would be a controlled adjustment, not a statement. Arsenal need energy for this opening stretch, not drama.

Defensive Problems Limit Arteta’s Hand

At the back, though, Arteta’s options narrow quickly.

William Saliba is out with a back injury. Jurrien Timber has yet to feature this season. Cristhian Mosquera is still a doubt with a muscle problem. Those absences strip away the luxury of choice and leave Ezri Konsa as the man expected to continue alongside Gabriel after starting in the Chelsea win.

There is also a note of caution around Riccardo Calafiori. He has started the season strongly, but his injury history means Arsenal are unlikely to gamble with him in September. Piero Hincapie, the only defender on the bench against Chelsea, suddenly looks important. He is a credible option to come in at left-back and give Calafiori a breather.

So while the front half of the pitch can be tweaked, the back line feels more like a puzzle solved by necessity than design.
