Arsenal Injury Updates: Saka and Rice Return Ahead of Manchester City Clash

Arsenal have been handed exactly the lift they wanted before Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City: Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are back in the frame.

Mikel Arteta, speaking with real conviction in his pre-match press conference, confirmed that the pair – along with new signing Martin Zubimendi – are on course to be involved in the Premier League curtain-raiser.

“They will be available, they trained with us today, they will train tomorrow and if they are in the condition that we expect them to be, they will be involved,” the Spaniard said, underlining just how central they are to his plans.

The mood around Arsenal’s training ground has matched that optimism. Arteta made a point of praising the squad’s attitude after a hectic summer, highlighting how many players cut their breaks short and returned in prime condition.

“Most of them [came back] earlier than expected, really fit with all the testing and they all seem in great condition,” he noted, a nod to the hunger inside a group that has spent two seasons pushing City to the limit.

Defensive worries cloud the picture

The good news stops when the conversation turns to the back line.

While Arsenal’s attack and midfield look well stocked, Arteta will be without Jurrien Timber and William Saliba against Enzo Maresca’s side. Both defenders remain in rehabilitation and nowhere near contention for Sunday.

Saliba’s situation is the more serious. Arteta described it bluntly as a “long-term injury,” a blow given the Frenchman’s status as a cornerstone of Arsenal’s defence.

Timber, by contrast, sits on a more encouraging path, even if he is still short of a competitive return. Arteta outlined where the Dutch international stands, stressing that Arsenal are refusing to rush him.

“Jurrien is progressing really well,” he said. “He is on the pitch, we are ramping up now with certain actions and especially the volume and the load. I think he is on a good trajectory, but there is still a few weeks to go. Wilo, as we all know, it's more a long-term injury.”

Timber’s importance to Arteta’s tactical structure is clear. His ability to step into midfield, defend wide and operate in tight spaces gives Arsenal a different dimension, and the club are treating his return with care.

The 23-year-old is edging closer to full integration. Arteta suggested that the next week to ten days will be decisive as Timber begins to rejoin full sessions and test himself properly alongside his teammates.

“We have to wait and see,” Arteta explained. “He needs to start to train with the group in the next week or so hopefully, and then see how he progresses from there. It's been a long-term issue, and we want to make sure that every step that we take is the right one, he feels right to do that, because he's such an important player for us.”

Eyes still on the market

Injuries at the back have only sharpened the focus on Arsenal’s work off the pitch as the transfer deadline looms.

Linked with several high-profile defensive targets, Arteta refused to be drawn on individual names. He did, though, leave no doubt about the scale of the club’s ambition and their willingness to keep reshaping the squad.

“I am not going to talk about an individual but what I can obviously tell you is [about] the ambition of the club,” he said. “It is big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad, in order to achieve. We have detected some areas that they can be a strength in - that is what we are trying to do.”

Saka and Rice back, Timber edging closer, Saliba out for the long haul and the market still alive: Arsenal head into the champions’ visit with questions at the back, weapons restored in midfield and attack, and a manager intent on squeezing every last upgrade out of this squad before the window slams shut.
