Arsenal Faces Injury Concerns Ahead of Chelsea Derby

Arsenal’s flawless start to the Premier League season has met its first real wobble before a ball is even kicked at the weekend.

According to reports, Mikel Arteta’s side went through Thursday’s open session at London Colney without two of their headline summer signings: Bruno Guimaraes and Cristhian Mosquera. Neither player was spotted on the grass, a conspicuous absence just days before a London derby with Chelsea that already feels like an early-season marker.

Guimaraes concern before Chelsea test

Guimaraes arrived in North London under the full glare of the spotlight, a £75 million capture from Newcastle United and the man earmarked to dictate Arsenal’s rhythm from deep. His start, though, has been stuttered by a nagging groin problem.

The Brazilian missed the opening-day cruise against Coventry City but was eased back with a 19‑minute cameo off the bench in Monday’s hard-fought 1-0 win at Aston Villa. Arteta has handled him like fine glass since the move from the Magpies, trimming his minutes and refusing to rush.

Arsenal can afford to be cautious in midfield on paper – the squad is stacked with options – yet this is no ordinary fixture. Guimaraes was signed to tilt games like this, to give Arsenal control against top-level opposition. Leaving him out against Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea would protect the long term, but it would strip some of the tactical edge from a side that has built its start on control and composure.

Mosquera worry grows

If Guimaraes is a concern, Mosquera is starting to feel like a genuine headache.

The Spanish defender limped out of the Villa win late on, replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 79th minute. At the time, Arteta moved to cool any panic, framing the change as a precaution rather than a reaction to a clear injury.

“He’s fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something, and that’s why we have the bench that we have, and that’s why we had to bring in Ezri,” the Arsenal manager said after the match.

That sounded reassuring on Monday night. By Thursday, with Mosquera missing from full training, the mood will have shifted. What looked like a small twinge now threatens to rule the 22‑year‑old out of one of the defining fixtures of Arsenal’s early campaign.

Should Mosquera fail to make it, the path clears for Konsa to step into the spotlight. The England international, a £51 million arrival from Aston Villa last month, is the obvious candidate to come in and make his full home debut at the Emirates. He knows the league, he knows the tempo, but being dropped straight into a derby against a free-scoring Chelsea side is a different kind of examination.

Defensive depth under strain

Arteta’s defensive resources are already creaking. Jurrien Timber remains a doubt for the weekend, still working his way back towards full sharpness, and William Saliba is out for a prolonged spell after an injury aggravated during the World Cup.

Those absences strip away the safety net. Where Arsenal once boasted one of the deepest defensive units in the division, they now walk a finer line. One more setback and the manager’s options start to look thin for a side with ambitions of going the distance on multiple fronts.

Perfect starts on the line

All of this unfolds against the backdrop of a perfect start for both clubs.

Arsenal opened with a controlled 3-0 win over Coventry City, then dug in to edge Aston Villa 1-0, a result that hinted at resilience as much as flair. Chelsea, under Alonso, have gone for a different kind of statement: chaos and goals. A 3-2 victory over Fulham followed by a wild 4-3 win against Brighton has underlined their attacking threat and defensive vulnerability in equal measure.

Something has to give.

Arteta will hope that what gives is Chelsea’s resistance, not his own back line or the groin of his £75 million midfield general. With the first real strain on Arsenal’s squad already visible, this derby will say plenty about how ready they are for a season that promises to be unforgiving at the top.
