Arsenal's Injury Concerns Ahead of Chelsea Clash
Mikel Arteta will send Arsenal into Sunday’s London derby with Chelsea with his squad creaking but far from breaking.
The Spaniard moved to calm fears over Cristhian Mosquera, insisting the defender’s hamstring concern is, for now, more about caution than crisis. Mosquera started the gritty 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Monday night but was replaced by Ezri Konsa after feeling discomfort.
“He was more a precaution than anything else, so we'll have to see tomorrow in the session how he feels,” Arteta said, refusing to rule the Spaniard in or out just yet.
Timber edging back
The more uplifting news for Arsenal comes at full-back. Jurrien Timber, who has not played a minute this season after undergoing a minor groin procedure in the summer, is finally edging back towards the matchday squad.
Timber was spotted in light training on Thursday and Arteta has now opened the door, just slightly, to the Dutchman featuring against Chelsea.
“Yeah, he's in really good condition at the moment,” Arteta explained. “As I said, he's been now a few weeks on the pitch and he's been training with us now, so he's in a good place.”
It would be a major boost ahead of a clash between two sides defending perfect Premier League records.
Guimaraes a fresh concern
Not all of the medical updates were as encouraging. Bruno Guimaraes faces a race against time to be ready after taking another knock in the win at Villa.
The Brazilian has already missed one league game this season — the opening 3-0 victory over Coventry City — after suffering a problem in the Community Shield rout of Manchester City. This latest setback has left Arsenal waiting again.
“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he's been assessed,” Arteta said. “Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training.”
Neither Mosquera nor Guimaraes were seen in the latest training images from London Colney on Thursday, a small detail that will only fuel the guessing game over Arteta’s line-up.
Saliba decision hints at return
There was a quieter but significant move in the background. William Saliba has been named in both Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad and their Champions League squad.
The centre-back is still resting a serious back issue sustained at the World Cup, and the club have been deliberately vague on timelines. Including him in both lists, though, signals genuine hope he can feature before January, when squads are resubmitted.
“Yes, we don't really know the amount of weeks he's going to be out because it's about a healing process in the beginning, it's a bit different,” Arteta said when asked for an update. “We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”
Arsenal will not rush him. They cannot afford to. But the door is now clearly ajar.

Arsenal and Chelsea arrive at the Emirates as two of only four Premier League clubs to have won both of their opening fixtures. The early table is meaningless in September, yet momentum is not.
Recent history leans Arsenal’s way. The two clubs met four times across all competitions last season. The Gunners won three and drew the other, establishing a firm grip on this rivalry under Arteta.
Now comes another test of that authority, with injuries, returning stars and a flawless start all colliding in one of the season’s first real measuring sticks.
