“We just managed the last few days with him. He has been out on the pitch doing training sessions. We have just been managing the load. He is potentially available,” Arteta explained.
The message is clear: Guimaraes is close, but Arsenal will not gamble recklessly on a player expected to become central to their season.
Timber delayed, but moving forward
Not every update carried the same optimism.
Jurrien Timber, battling a groin problem, will miss the Monday night clash despite encouraging signs behind the scenes. The Dutch defender is edging forward, but not quickly enough for Villa Park.
“Jurrien is progressing really well,” Arteta said. “It is the third week in a row that we have increased his load. If it all goes well, we can step it up next week.”
Arsenal see the long-term value in Timber and are clearly intent on avoiding a setback, even if it leaves them lighter for a tricky away day.
Saliba blow hangs over Arsenal
The real cloud over Arsenal’s defensive plans remains William Saliba.
The French centre-back, a cornerstone of their recent defensive resurgence, faces a lengthy spell out with a persistent back problem. Arteta did not sugar-coat it.
“Willy is going to take a while,” he admitted, a blunt assessment that underlines the scale of the challenge.

A reshaped backline at Villa Park
In that context, Konsa’s return takes on added weight. Alongside Gabriel Magalhaes, he offers experience, athleticism and familiarity with Villa’s threats after years at the club they now visit.
Cristhian Mosquera has impressed in the early weeks, stepping into the void with maturity, but competition is arriving fast. Konsa’s availability gives Arteta the option to adjust his pairing, his structure, and even his approach in possession.
Arsenal travel to Villa without their defensive talisman, still waiting on Timber, and nursing Guimaraes back towards full sharpness. Yet they do so with a big summer signing ready for a reunion, and with the chance to show that this squad can absorb setbacks and still dictate the story of their season.
