Timber left out as precaution
One name jumped off the team sheet when the line-ups dropped: Jurrien Timber. The Dutch defender, who only just returned to first-team action after a long groin injury, was not even on the bench.
Timber had stepped back onto the pitch last week, coming on for Ben White and finally ending a frustrating spell on the sidelines. His absence at Ipswich raised obvious questions.
According to BBC Sport, Arsenal view Timber’s omission as a precaution. There is no suggestion of a fresh setback with his long-term groin problem, just a deliberate decision to manage his minutes and avoid rushing him.
Given his recent history, the caution is understandable. Timber missed the 2026 World Cup because of the injury and sat out the club’s entire pre-season. Arsenal want him fully right, not just available.
White joins growing defensive list
If Timber is being wrapped in cotton wool, Ben White is a more immediate concern.
The defender is out of the Ipswich tie after picking up a muscular issue during the first half of the 2-0 win over Sunderland. Early signs point towards a groin problem, but the exact severity has not yet been confirmed.
His absence comes at a time when Arsenal’s defensive options are already stretched. William Saliba remains sidelined, while Cristhian Mosquera is still out but considered more likely to return after the international break.
So Arsenal arrive at Portman Road with momentum, belief, and a clear sense of unfinished business in the EFL Cup – but with their back line patched together once again. How long can they keep winning while walking that tightrope?
