Andros Townsend walked away from an incident in Thailand that could easily have ended his career – or far worse.
At Tinsulanon Stadium, ahead of PT Prachuap’s Thai League 1 clash with Pattani FC, the 35-year-old winger was accidentally run over by a heavy pitch roller during the warm-up. What began as a routine pre-match session turned into a scene of real panic.
Townsend, attempting an aerial backheel near the touchline, landed in the path of the moving ground machine. The roller ploughed straight into him, catching his hip and thigh. Goals from Saharat Kanyaroj, Taoua Ferreira and Edgar Mendez put them 3-0 up, turning the contest into a procession despite the chaos that had preceded kick-off. With the result already secure in stoppage time, Townsend completed his unlikely journey from underneath a pitch roller to back on the grass, coming on late in the match.
The 13-cap former England international only joined PT Prachuap recently, after a spell with Kanchanaburi Power and a stint in Turkey with Antalyaspor. Before that, he carved out a respected Premier League career with Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Everton and Luton Town, producing the kind of long-range goals and direct wing play that made him a familiar figure in English football.
Here, though, the story was not about a spectacular strike. It was about escape. PT Prachuap still collected the three points, but the main talking point was their marquee signing’s brush with a freak, potentially devastating accident.
Townsend is expected to undergo further tests on his hip and thigh in the coming days as the club moves to protect their star winger and manage any lingering damage. PT Prachuap will want him fully fit before their next league fixture, especially after such a close call.
