The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was involved in a bizarre pre-match incident in Thailand when he was run over by a pitch roller before his team’s game on Saturday night.

Townsend, 35, was warming up on the touchline when a member of Pattani’s staff appeared to lose control of the heavy machine. The roller veered into the 13-cap England international, knocking him off his feet. His left leg briefly became trapped under the vehicle, prompting immediate concern from those nearby.

Somehow, he got up. And he played.

Despite the scare, Townsend came off the bench late on in Prachuap’s 3-0 victory, the incident quickly turning from worrying to surreal as clips of the collision spread rapidly across social media.

The winger, who made his name at Tottenham and Crystal Palace and now doubles as a regular ITV pundit, chose to laugh it off. On Instagram, he leaned into one of football’s most enduring clichés: the cold, grim slog of a trip to Stoke.

“It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why,” he wrote on his story, referencing a recent post where he had contrasted a sun-soaked Thai away day with the famously windswept visits to Stoke’s stadium earlier in his career.

Thai fans have wasted no time turning the moment into online folklore. One post hailed him as “The King of Memes in Thai League history.” Townsend replied in kind, dropping a “trust me” and letting four laughing emojis do the rest.

Stoke on a Tuesday night always had a reputation. Getting hit by a pitch roller in Pattani might have just rewritten the scale.
