Yellow cards can be a strategic tool to slow down opponents, yet collecting two during the World Cup leads to a one-match suspension, which can hurt a team’s chances. The 2026 World Cup introduced a fresh approach to handling yellow card accumulation with its expanded 32-team knockout phase.
FIFA now resets players’ yellow card counts at the start of the quarterfinals, wiping previous cautions that could cause suspensions. This reset already took place for teams advancing beyond the group stage, meaning any yellow cards from those early matches no longer count heading into the Round of 32. But if a player picked up a booking in the Round of 32, they remain vulnerable until the quarterfinal reset.

The table below lists players who have received one yellow card since the Round of 32 and are at risk of suspension if booked again before the quarterfinals. It only includes players from teams that advanced to the quarterfinals.
How Yellow Cards Affect Player Availability
Players receive yellow cards for fouls like reckless challenges, stopping promising attacks deliberately, wasting time, or simulating fouls. Two yellows in one game equal a red card and an immediate sending off, causing a suspension for the next match. A straight red card leads to the same automatic ban but can sometimes result in a longer suspension.
Accumulated yellows across multiple games also trigger suspensions. Usually, two separate cautions cause a player to miss their team’s following game. What changed for 2026 is the timing of these resets. Previously, a yellow card earned in the group stage could carry through many rounds, but now FIFA clears them twice: once after the group stage and again after the quarterfinals.
New rules also allow referees to send players off for covering their mouths to hide remarks during disputes or for leaving the pitch in protest. VAR can review and overturn certain mistaken dismissals, including incorrect second yellows or wrongful reds.
Are Quarterfinal Suspensions Due to Yellow Cards Possible?
Yes, but the reset rule limits this. Since yellow cards clear out after the group stage and again post-quarterfinals, players cannot be suspended from the final just because of accumulated yellows. However, if a player picks up a second yellow in either the Round of 32 or Round of 16, they will miss the next match. If booked again during the quarterfinal, they would be banned for the semifinals.
