The upcoming 2026 World Cup semifinals will feature four of the highest-ranked teams in the FIFA World Rankings. Each of these nations has previously lifted the World Cup trophy, ensuring there will be no new champion this time. One team will enhance its legacy by adding another title to their collection, climbing higher on the all-time list.
Yet none of the semifinalists currently top the all-time winners’ list.
Countries With Most World Cup Wins
Only eight countries have claimed the World Cup, with six of them winning more than once. The full list is:
Brazil remains the leader with five titles. Germany and Italy follow closely, each holding four wins. Neither Germany nor Italy made it far in the recent tournaments; Italy missed the last three World Cups while Germany exited early in the round of 32.
England’s World Cup History
England has one World Cup victory from 1966, a memory still cherished by many fans despite it being six decades ago. While England reached the semifinals in 1990 and 2018, the country hasn't advanced beyond that stage since their win. The hope for 2026 is to secure two wins and bring home the trophy again after such a long wait.
France’s World Cup Success
France has won twice, first in 1998 and again in 2018. Didier Deschamps captained the 1998 team when France hosted the tournament and defeated the defending champions, Brazil. Their 2018 triumph over Croatia brought the nation back to the top after 20 years.
Spain’s Single World Cup Triumph
Spain has also won once, achieving victory in 2010. This success came more recently than England’s and happened during the tournament hosted by South Africa. Key players like David Villa and Andrés Iniesta helped Spain overcome the Netherlands in extra time, with Iniesta scoring the decisive goal.
Argentina Leads Among 2026 Semifinalists
Argentina holds three World Cup titles, the most among the four semifinalists for 2026. The current champions secured their latest win in 2022 after a thrilling final against France. Their earlier victories were in 1978 as hosts and in 1986, a memorable campaign led by Diego Maradona who dazzled the tournament in Mexico.
