World Cup Group Stage Recap: USA Leads Group D Despite Loss; Australia and Paraguay Advance
The final group matches of the World Cup brought plenty of drama as teams fought for knockout round spots. Groups D, E, and F played on Thursday with several surprises.
Group E Shakes Up Early
Ecuador shocked Germany with a 2-1 victory, securing their place in the knockout phase but still uncertain about their next opponent. Germany topped the group despite the loss, while Ivory Coast earned second place after beating Curaçao 2-0.
Group F’s Outcome
The Netherlands cruised to a 3-1 win over Tunisia, finishing first in Group F. Japan and Sweden drew 1-1, ensuring all three teams from this group advance to the Round of 32.
Group D Closes Out the Night
The U.S. had already secured the top spot in Group D before Türkiye scored a last-minute winner to beat the U.S. 3-2. Meanwhile, Paraguay and Australia played to a scoreless draw, both moving forward with Australia as group runner-up and Paraguay holding third place, awaiting confirmation if they progress as one of the best third-place teams.
Key Moments from Group D
The U.S. fell to Türkiye due to defensive lapses that haunted them throughout the match. Kaan Ayhan’s stoppage-time goal ended Türkiye’s tournament run on a high note but left the U.S. still sitting atop the group.
The Paraguay-Australia match was a tactical battle with few chances. Paraguay’s Mauricio fired the first shot easily handled by Australian goalkeeper Beach. Australia responded immediately but couldn’t convert their opportunities. Both sides made substitutions late, including Paraguay bringing on José Canale and Australia introducing Paul Okon-Engstler and Tete Yengi. Paraguay’s Diego Gomez received a yellow card and will miss the next game if Paraguay advances.
At halftime, Australia led slightly in chances but hadn’t tested Paraguay’s keeper much. Paraguay controlled more possession late in the half but failed to threaten significantly.
Australia and Paraguay Progress
Australia’s goalless draw was enough to confirm their advancement to the knockout stage as Group D’s runners-up. Paraguay must wait to see if they qualify among the best third-place teams for the next round.
"It’s a tough loss for the Americans," said a commentator. "Yet, they still claimed the group and move forward."
As things stand, Australia will meet the second-place team from Group G in Dallas, currently Iran.
