World Cup 2026 Knockout Round: Teams That Have Advanced So Far

Who Has Secured a Spot in the World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage?

The 2026 World Cup has entered its second week, with several teams now playing their second group matches. This phase is critical as some teams have already guaranteed their progression to the knockout rounds.

This tournament features 48 teams, expanding the knockout stage to include a Round of 32 rather than the usual Round of 16. Not only do the top two teams from each group advance, but the eight best third-place teams will also move forward. For those curious about which third-place squads remain in contention, the standings are being closely monitored.

Mexico Leads the Way

Mexico was the first nation to confirm its place in the Round of 32 after a tight 1-0 victory over South Korea on Thursday night. They had started the tournament strong with a 2-0 win against South Africa. Earlier that day, South Africa and Czechia drew 1-1, which meant that the winner of the Mexico-South Korea match would take the top spot in Group A.

The game saw a goalless first half until Luis Romo capitalized on an error by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, who collided with a teammate inside the box and lost possession. Romo seized the opportunity to score the decisive goal.

In the final moments, Mexico’s goalkeeper Raúl Rangel made two crucial saves to preserve the lead and deny South Korea any chance to equalize.

By winning Group A, El Tri not only secure advancement but will also face one of the third-place teams from Groups C, E, F, H, or I. Their Round of 32 match will take place in Mexico City, keeping them on home soil for this stage.
