Swansea City Acquire Ghanaian Winger Joseph Opoku from Zulte Waregem

Swansea City have confirmed the signing of 20-year-old Ghanaian winger Joseph Opoku from Belgian side Zulte Waregem. The player has penned a four-year contract, with the club holding an option to extend it for an extra year.

Opoku joined Zulte Waregem in 2024 and played a key role in their promotion to the Belgian Pro League. His performance last season included 10 goals and six assists, marking a significant breakthrough in his career.

The young winger has also gained international experience, making his senior debut for Ghana in a friendly against Mexico in May. Although he was named in Ghana’s preliminary squad for the World Cup, he did not make the final selection.

Coach and Director Comments

Vitor Matos, Swansea’s head coach, highlighted Opoku’s readiness for the Championship’s demands. He mentioned that Opoku is "a fast and sharp player" who has already adapted to the physicality and intensity required. The player has joined Swansea's pre-season tour in Austria and has completed his first training session with the team.

Ben Stevens, Swansea’s sporting director, expressed enthusiasm about Opoku’s arrival. He praised the winger’s attacking qualities and noted his valuable experience from two seasons in Belgium’s top flight combined with his involvement with Ghana’s national teams.

Summer Transfer Window Activity

Opoku represents the fifth new signing under Vitor Matos this summer, following the acquisitions of Elijah Just, Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo, and Leo Walta.
