Saudi Roshn League Schedule Changes Ahead of Gulf 27
The Saudi Roshn League is heading for a significant reshuffle, with fixtures set to move to accommodate the national team’s push for Arabian Gulf Cup glory on home soil.
Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October. That tournament window is already tight. Now it is about to squeeze the domestic calendar even harder.
According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, the Roshn League authorities are preparing a series of changes to the schedule after a request from national team coach Georgios Donis. The Greek technical director has asked for the national team’s training camp to be extended by an extra seven days before the start of Gulf 27, a move that leaves the league with little choice but to redraw its plans.
The knock-on effect will not be minor. The report states that more than one round will be affected, with particular focus on the eighth round, currently set for 17 September – less than a week before the tournament kicks off.
That round includes one of the league’s showpiece fixtures: a clásico between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena. Officials now expect that entire round to be postponed, taking one of the Saudi game’s fiercest rivalries out of its original slot and throwing it into an already crowded calendar later in the season.
For Donis, the disruption is a price worth paying. He wants maximum preparation time as he attempts to guide Saudi Arabia back to a title they have not lifted since 2003 – a 23-year drought that has turned the Gulf crown into a major target.
The Greek coach took charge of the national team before the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. That campaign ended in disappointment, with Saudi Arabia exiting at the group stage, bottom of Group H with just two points.
Now, with home advantage in Jeddah and a league bending around his plans, Donis is clearly betting that an extended camp can turn that recent frustration into a long-awaited regional triumph.
