Jose Mourinho Reveals Call That Kept Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has lifted the lid on the phone call he believes helped keep Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid and out of Arsenal’s reach.

The Brazilian forward spent the early part of the summer at the centre of a huge transfer storm, heavily linked with a move to the Premier League as Arsenal circled with a colossal offer. The North London club were ready to smash both their transfer record and wage structure to land the 26-year-old, with reports of a bid in the region of €150 million for a player whose previous deal was due to expire next summer.

It would have been a British-record transfer. Arsenal were convinced they could tempt him away.

Real Madrid, and Vinicius, had other ideas.

The winger has instead committed his peak years to the Bernabeu, signing a lucrative new contract that extends his stay to 2032 and takes him into a potential eighth season and beyond in white. Behind that decision, Mourinho says, was a blunt message from the coach who has returned to the Madrid dugout this summer.

“I called him, I told him Vini, where do you want to go? You only know Real Madrid,” Mourinho told El Chiringuito TV, recalling the conversation.

Then came the warning.

“When you leave, then you'll know what Real Madrid is. Don't go. It's not worth it. I was sure [he would stay] because he is in love with Real Madrid!”

For Arsenal, it underlines the scale of the challenge when they step into this market: even record-breaking money could not pull Vinicius away from a club Mourinho insists you can only truly appreciate once you walk out of the door.
