PSG Targets Yan Diomande Amid Liverpool Pursuit

Paris Saint-Germain have moved to the front of the queue for Yan Diomande, opening talks over a deal that could reshape their attack – and Liverpool’s summer.

The French champions have now formally sounded out what it would take to prise the 21-year-old from RB Leipzig, with sources indicating Diomande’s camp has told Liverpool that Paris is his preferred destination if he leaves Germany in this window. For a club that believed Anfield would be his landing spot should he choose the Premier League, it is a brutal twist.

Liverpool have invested months in this chase. Scouts tracked Diomande closely throughout last season, the recruitment team built a detailed case, and the club positioned itself as one of the leading contenders for one of Europe’s most explosive young wingers. Inside Anfield, the feeling was simple: if he crossed the Channel, he would do it in red.

Reality has bitten over the last 24 hours.

Liverpool’s €100m push meets Leipzig’s wall

The Merseyside club tried to get ahead of the storm. One of the driving forces behind their urgency before the World Cup was a fear of exactly this scenario – a multi-club shootout once Europe’s heavyweights truly engaged.

They made their move last week: a package worth around €100m (£86.3m / $114m) went in. Leipzig did not blink.

The Bundesliga side have anchored Diomande’s valuation closer to €130m (£112.2m / $148.2m) and, crucially, have never hidden their preference to keep him for at least one more season before tying him down to a new long-term deal. That stance remains intact. No discounts, no panic.

PSG, though, sense an opening. The club has been buoyed by Diomande’s preference for Paris and by strong ties between transfer advisor Luis Campos and former Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, now Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Those relationships have only hardened the Ligue 1 champions’ belief that a deal is possible if they press at the right angles.

Luis Enrique is a major driving force. He sees Diomande as one of the standout young attacking talents on the continent and has already begun sketching how the Ivorian would slide into an evolving frontline at the Parc des Princes.

For Liverpool, that is the nightmare. They had accelerated their plans precisely to avoid competing with the financial and emotional pull of PSG. Now they find themselves watching their top target lean towards Paris while Leipzig hold firm on a towering price.

Barcola: from frustrated backup to Anfield opportunity?

PSG’s pursuit of Diomande will not be painless inside their own dressing room. The clearest potential casualty is Bradley Barcola.

The France World Cup forward ended last season frustrated, reduced to a supporting role during PSG’s Champions League run-in and increasingly used from the bench. Those close to the situation indicate he has already signalled he will seek a move if he cannot secure a guaranteed first-team role next season.

Interest in Barcola is strong across Europe. Liverpool are among the clubs circling, and Diomande’s arrival in Paris would only strengthen the likelihood that Barcola looks for a new stage.

Liverpool have already earmarked the 23-year-old as a serious alternative to Diomande. Reports place his valuation around €90m (£77.6m / $102.6m), a hefty figure but one that sits below Leipzig’s demands. New Reds boss Andoni Iraola is said to be an admirer, and the shifting landscape at PSG could hand him the opening he wants.

If Diomande walks through the door at the Parc des Princes, Barcola may see his route blocked. For Liverpool, that blockage in Paris could become a clear pathway to Anfield.

Four statement moves: PSG redraw the front line

Diomande is just one piece of a broader PSG rebuild. The club is pushing hard for four major attacking additions as it reshapes the squad around Enrique’s ideas.

Their pursuit of Monaco talent Maghnes Akliouche runs on a separate track. Internally, Akliouche is viewed as the natural successor to Lee Kang-in, who is closing on a move to Atletico Madrid, rather than as a rival to Diomande for similar spaces on the pitch.

The overhaul continues with the fallout from Goncalo Ramos’ club-record switch to AC Milan. PSG are already lining up fresh firepower, with Bournemouth striker Eli Junior Kroupi emerging as one of the leading options under serious consideration. Work is ongoing behind the scenes to test Bournemouth’s resolve and gauge the structure of a possible deal.

The French champions are also pushing hard at the other end of the age spectrum. They believe they are well positioned in the race for Lille prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi. Lille, for their part, are open to a sale if any agreement includes a loan back for the coming season – a model that appeals to PSG as they try to balance immediate ambition with long-term planning.

Any move for Bouaddi will hinge on what happens in midfield. Fabian Ruiz continues to attract interest from clubs across Europe, but Enrique would ideally keep the Spain international for at least another year, valuing his experience in what is becoming an increasingly youthful squad.

Liverpool’s battle is slipping away

Amid all this movement, Liverpool remain fixed on Diomande. They have invested time, data, and political capital in the 21-year-old. They still believe in his ceiling.

But belief is one thing. Leverage is another.

PSG now hold the player’s preference and have opened talks with Leipzig. The German club are refusing to budge from their lofty valuation and are comfortable keeping him for another season. Liverpool, who weeks ago felt the deal sat within their grasp, are suddenly fighting from a weakened position.

The question now is whether they double down on an increasingly difficult pursuit or pivot decisively towards Barcola and a different kind of statement.
