O'Neill Invites Teenagers to Northern Ireland Squad

Michael O'Neill has turned to youth and potential as Northern Ireland step into a crucial June window, calling up uncapped teenagers Braidan Graham and Ceadach O'Neill for friendlies against Guinea and France.

The two 18-year-olds, both still waiting for a senior club appearance, have forced their way into the senior setup on the back of sharp, eye-catching form at academy level.

Graham, a lively forward with a ruthless streak in front of goal, has hit 12 goals in 18 games for Everton’s Under-21s this season. He made the bench for the Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest in December, a clear sign of his progress, but has yet to make his first-team debut.

Ceadach O'Neill has followed a similar path at Arsenal. Operating across the attacking line, he has impressed in the club’s underage sides and earned a place on the bench for FA Cup ties against Wigan Athletic and Southampton. Now he steps into a full international squad for the first time.

For Michael O’Neill, freshly tied down as Northern Ireland manager until 2032, this is a squad shaped as much by absences as by opportunity.

Key defender Dan Ballard of Sunderland misses out through injury, a significant blow at the heart of the back line. Paddy McNair is also unavailable after helping Hull City clinch promotion to the Premier League, while Portsmouth defender Terry Devlin sits out as well.

The defensive issues run deeper. Eoin Toal remains sidelined, having already missed Bolton’s League One play-off final win over Stockport County. In midfield, George Saville and Brad Lyons are both absent, stripping away experience and bite in the centre of the pitch.

Amid the setbacks, there is a notable recall. Swansea City midfielder Ethan Galbraith returns to the fold despite not featuring since the World Cup play-off defeat by Italy at the end of March. His inclusion signals trust in his quality and temperament, even without recent minutes.

Liverpool teenager Kieran Morrison, another bright attacking talent, keeps his place and joins Graham and O’Neill in a youthful attacking contingent that gives the squad a fresh edge.

Upcoming Matches

Northern Ireland will first meet Guinea in Spain on 4 May, a fixture that offers O’Neill a controlled environment to experiment, test new partnerships and blood emerging players. Four days later, the stakes and the spotlight both rise.

On 8 June in Lille, Northern Ireland face France in what will be their final match before the World Cup. Against one of the global heavyweights, the teenagers and the reshaped squad will discover exactly how far they still have to climb.
