Nico Gonzalez Leaves Manchester City as Newcastle Makes Move for £52m Midfielder

Manchester City have told Nico Gonzalez he is free to leave before the window shuts, opening the door for Newcastle United to move on their top midfield target.

Inside the City dressing room, not everyone agrees.

According to reports, several of Gonzalez’s teammates have tried to persuade the Spaniard to stay and fight for his place. The club’s stance is different. With competition in midfield intensifying, City have made it clear the 24-year-old can go if the right offer lands.

Newcastle, short of midfield craft after the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, have already made their move. The Athletic report that the Magpies have held “exploratory conversations” over a deal for Gonzalez, who joined City from FC Porto in January last year for £52 million.

He arrived as a major investment. He never became a regular.

Under Pep Guardiola last season, Gonzalez struggled for sustained minutes, blocked by Rodri’s dominance and Mateo Kovacic’s reliability. The pattern seems set to continue. After last weekend’s Community Shield, he again appears behind Kovacic in the pecking order under new head coach Enzo Maresca, despite hopes that the managerial change might revive his role.

The pressure on his place has only grown. City have brought in Elliot Anderson and are in advanced talks with Lille over Ayyoub Bouaddi, crowding the central areas even further. Against that backdrop, the club have effectively opened the exit door.

This time, Gonzalez is listening.

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope reports that the midfielder is “open” to joining Newcastle, even as some City players urge him to stay. Newcastle are believed to be weighing up three midfield options, with Gonzalez described as the “leading target” at this stage.

It marks a sharp turn from his public stance earlier in the summer. Speaking after a friendly win over K-League All Stars in South Korea at the start of the month, Gonzalez insisted he was content with life at the Etihad.

“I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here,” he said.

“I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position.

“That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”

Now the reality of that competition is biting. City’s message is clear. Newcastle’s interest is concrete. The window is ticking down.

Gonzalez has insisted he embraces the fight. The next move will show whether he wants to keep fighting in Manchester, or take on a new battle in black and white.
