Newcastle United Pursues Youssouf Fofana Amid Midfield Rebuild

Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild has taken another twist, with AC Milan’s Youssouf Fofana emerging as the latest name on a growing shortlist.

With just over two weeks left in the transfer window and Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali already gone, Matthias Jaissle is still hunting for both know-how and numbers in the middle of the pitch. The club has sounded out Bayern Munich over Joao Palhinha and kept Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall in its sights. Now a new opportunity has opened up in Serie A.

Fofana told he can leave Milan

Italian journalist Matteo Moretto reported on Saturday that Newcastle have asked about Fofana’s situation after Milan informed the France international he no longer figures in their plans.

“Fofana is on his way out, and he was informed of this in person,” Moretto said, via MilanNews, stressing that there are currently “no advanced negotiations with any specific club.”

Newcastle are not alone. Moretto listed the Magpies among three clubs to have already made contact over the 27-year-old.

“I can tell you that Nottingham have inquired, Newcastle have inquired, and Juventus have inquired,” he said.

That interest, for now, sits at the exploratory stage. No bid, no talks over fees, no agreement in sight.

Juventus push harder as race develops

While Newcastle weigh up their options, Juventus appear to be pressing ahead more decisively. Moretto described Fofana as “certainly an option for Juventus” and confirmed that Juve and Milan have already spoken about potential scenarios and “market developments” around a deal.

Milan only brought Fofana in from Monaco in 2024 for around €20 million (£17.3 million), handing him a contract through 2028. Even so, the club are now open to a sale, and most reports place their asking price back in the €15–20 million range (£13–17 million).

That figure would make Fofana significantly cheaper than some of Newcastle’s other midfield targets and an intriguing proposition for a club trying to reshape its engine room without blowing the budget.

Newcastle still at the starting line

For all the noise, the situation remains fluid. Moretto has repeatedly underlined that there is no “clear and final solution” yet for Milan’s preferred sale, and again stressed there are “no advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time.”

Newcastle, then, are in the conversation but not yet at the table. Palhinha, Bergvall and others remain in the frame, each offering a different profile and price point as Jaissle and the recruitment team work against the clock.

Whether the Magpies decide to turn a simple enquiry into a serious move for Fofana could define the shape of their midfield for years – and dictate how bold this new era at St James’ Park really becomes.
