Joao Cancelo's Arrival at Barcelona: Announcement Delayed
Barcelona’s week of excitement has hit a small pause.
The club is closing in on two headline arrivals, Joao Cancelo and Rodri, but only one of them is expected to step into the spotlight at the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly.
Cancelo in Barcelona, but no announcement yet
Joao Cancelo is already in the city. He has signed with Barcelona, he’s back where he wanted to be, and he’s made major sacrifices to get there, walking away from the salary he was still due at Al Hilal for the remainder of his contract.
Yet, officially, he is not a Barcelona player.
According to Victor Navarro, the club does not plan to announce the Cancelo deal immediately. The confirmation could be pushed back by two to three days, leaving fans waiting a little longer for the formal reveal.
The exact reason for the delay remains unclear. The player is in Barcelona, the agreement is in place, but some final details between Barça and Al Hilal are believed to still be on the table. At the same time, the club’s attention is heavily trained on the grand unveiling of Rodri during the Joan Gamper Trophy clash.
Cancelo has done everything possible to force this move. His determination to return to Barcelona has been evident throughout the saga, and the club’s insistence on bringing him back underlines how much they value his profile.
No Gamper minutes for Cancelo – or Rodri
The timing of the announcement has sporting consequences.
With the deal not yet made official, Barcelona will not be able to use Joao Cancelo in the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Al Ahly. The Portuguese full-back will have to watch from the sidelines as the team is presented to the fans.
Rodri, too, is unlikely to feature. The Spanish international is expected to be unveiled at the Gamper, but that presentation does not guarantee minutes on the pitch. His first real action in a Barcelona shirt should come a little later.
Both players are instead being lined up for a more competitive stage: Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Elche on August 23. By then, all paperwork should be settled, all presentations completed, and the focus will shift to what happens on the grass.
A battle brewing at full-back
Once Cancelo is cleared to play, the questions start.
Does he walk straight into the starting XI? And what does that mean for Alejandro Balde?
Balde’s pre-season form has raised concerns, his performances falling short of expectations at a time when competition for places is tightening. Cancelo, with his experience at the highest level and his versatility, offers an immediate alternative and a very different profile.
If the Portuguese defender hits the ground running against Elche, the dynamic on that flank could change quickly. For Barcelona, that’s exactly the kind of internal competition they want. For Balde, it’s a clear challenge.
The deals are almost done. The real intrigue begins when the ink finally dries and the team sheet for August 23 lands on the table.
