Genk Signs Full-Back Kevin Amaro from Liverpool Montevideo

Genk have dipped back into a familiar market – and they think they’ve found their next full-back gem.

The Belgian Pro League side have confirmed the signing of 22-year-old right-back Kevin Amaro from Liverpool Montevideo, handing the Uruguayan international a five-year contract. It’s a long-term bet on a player they believe can grow fast, and grow big.

Another Latin American full-back for Genk

This is a path Genk know well. They have built a reputation for spotting attacking full-backs from Latin America, polishing them, then watching them explode onto the European stage. Daniel Muñoz is the obvious reference point: signed from Colombia, developed in Limburg, and now a European trophy winner with Crystal Palace.

Amaro arrives with that example hanging over the move like a challenge. Can he be the next one?

Capable of operating anywhere down the right flank, Amaro brings versatility as well as energy. He’s already been capped a handful of times by Uruguay, a sign that his profile is rising beyond the Uruguayan Primera División.

From Montevideo to Belgium

Amaro made his senior debut for Liverpool in the 2022 season, but his real breakthrough came in 2024. That year he cemented himself in the first team, racking up 42 appearances and scoring once. In 2025 he featured 34 times, again with a single goal, before adding another 17 games this season prior to his move.

Those numbers tell one story: he plays. A lot. For a 22-year-old full-back, that volume of football in a physically demanding league is no small foundation.

Genk will expect him to adapt quickly to the tempo and tactical demands of the Belgian game, but his minutes in Montevideo suggest he has the engine and resilience to cope.

A squad still finding its feet

Amaro walks into a Genk side still trying to set its tone for the new campaign. Two games into the Belgian Pro League season, they have one win and one defeat – a start that offers promise but no clear pattern.

That’s where a signing like this can shift the picture. If Amaro settles, if his running and aggression on the right start to bite, Genk’s latest Latin American gamble might again reshape their season – and, in time, his own career.
