Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez's Future at Chelsea
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has drawn a clear line in the sand over Enzo Fernandez’s future, insisting the midfielder remains central to his plans despite mounting transfer noise.
Manchester City have been strongly linked with the 25-year-old Argentina international as they search for midfield reinforcements, but Chelsea have already made their stance plain to the player’s camp: Fernandez is not for sale this summer. A 14 August deadline for any formal bid came and went without an offer, and the club see that as the end of the matter.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, Alonso underlined that message and moved to shut down the distraction.
“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday,” Alonso said, framing the build-up firmly around the season, not the speculation.
The Spaniard also highlighted Fernandez’s response since rejoining the squad, pointing to the midfielder’s work behind the scenes rather than the headlines swirling around him.
“He has integrated really well since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is training really well. I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want,” Alonso added.
City’s interest has not gone away as they continue to scan the market, but Chelsea’s position is unchanged: Fernandez stays at Stamford Bridge. Inside the club, he is viewed as a key piece of the project, not a tradeable asset.
The relationship with the fanbase has been more complicated. Fernandez has faced a mixed reception from Chelsea supporters during pre-season, a reflection of a turbulent period since his arrival and the team’s inconsistent form. Yet when Chelsea handed him the captain’s armband in the friendly win over Real Sociedad, it felt like a deliberate statement of trust from the hierarchy and the head coach.
The transfer window shuts on 1 September, so the noise around Fernandez will not disappear overnight. For now, though, Alonso is planning with him, not without him – and unless someone tests Chelsea’s resolve in spectacular fashion, the Argentina midfielder looks set to lead from the heart of their midfield rather than headline a late-summer exit.
