Mexico Advances to World Cup Last 32 as Canada Celebrates Historic Win

Mexico Secures Spot in World Cup Knockouts

Mexico became the first team to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup after a narrow 1-0 win against South Korea. The decisive goal came from Luis Romo, benefiting from a major mistake by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu during their match in Guadalajara. This victory guarantees Mexico the top spot in Group A, with one game left to play.

With South Africa and the Czech Republic drawing 1-1 earlier, Mexico's position at the summit means they will remain on home soil for their round of 32 match, facing a third-placed opponent in Mexico City. South Korea currently hold second place with three points, while the Czech Republic and South Africa still have chances with one point each.

Canada Achieves First Ever World Cup Victory

In Group B, Canada moved close to the last 32 after an emphatic 6-0 win over a nine-man Qatar team at Vancouver’s BC Place. This marked Canada’s first World Cup win ever, breaking a streak of six straight losses from previous tournaments in 1986 and 2022.

Prime Minister Mark Carney was part of the enthusiastic crowd, donning a replica Canada jersey as Jesse Marsch’s squad dominated the match. Juventus striker Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba, and an own goal from Mohammad Manai contributed to the tally. This result leaves Canada needing just one point from their next match against Switzerland to claim the top spot in their group.

Sadly, the celebration was clouded by a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Kone. He suffered a severe left leg injury after a harsh challenge by Qatar’s Assim Madibo, who received a red card following an initial yellow. Kone was taken off on a stretcher, requiring oxygen and hospital treatment for a suspected broken leg.

"It was right in front of us, and everyone could hear the bone snap," said coach Jesse Marsch. "He is at the hospital and will prepare for surgery. It's a big loss for us because Ismael is the heart of our team."

Switzerland Revives Their Campaign

Switzerland bounced back strongly in Los Angeles with a 4-1 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina at SoFi Stadium. Johan Manzambi scored twice, while Ruben Vargas and Granit Xhaka also found the net in a late scoring surge. This win boosts Switzerland’s hopes of moving beyond the last 16 for the first time in this World Cup.

Bosnia, who qualified by upsetting Italy in a playoff, now face an uphill battle to avoid an early exit, sitting with just one point after two games.

South Africa Clings to Qualification Hope

In another Group A fixture, South Africa managed a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. Michal Sadilek put the Czechs ahead, but Teboho Mokoena earned a late penalty to level the score. Both teams remain in contention for the last 32 but will likely need victories in their final group matches to advance.
