Inter believe they have finally found their answer on the right flank. After a summer of dead ends and late hijacks, Djed Spence is now moving rapidly towards a €30m-plus-add-ons transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, according to aligned reports in Italy and England.
La Gazzetta dello Sport first outlined the figures, with The Athletic now mirroring the same numbers from the UK side of the deal. The agreement is not done yet, but the negotiation has reached an advanced stage and all parties are pushing in the same direction.
For Inter, it would close a problematic search. Replacing Denzel Dumfries after his move to Real Madrid has proved anything but straightforward. Chelsea snatched Marco Palestra from Atalanta at the final moment, Anan Khalaili’s proposed move collapsed after he failed a medical from Union Saint-Gilloise, and the shortlist kept shrinking.
The pressure finally told, and focus settled on Spence.
The 26-year-old is keen. All sources agree on that point. Inter arrive from a dominant 2025-26 campaign, sweeping both Serie A and the Coppa Italia, and heading back into the Champions League with momentum and money to spend. For a player looking to relaunch his career at the highest level, that is a powerful lure.
Spence also brings something Simone Inzaghi values: flexibility. He can operate on either flank, as a traditional full-back or as a wing-back, giving Inter cover and competition across the width of the pitch. In a system that leans heavily on the energy and aggression of its wide players, that profile matters as much as the fee.
This would not be his first taste of Italian football. Spence spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at Genoa from Tottenham, arriving initially as cover for Stefano Sabelli. He was supposed to wait his turn. Instead, he forced his way into the side, even on the left, and closed the spell with 16 competitive appearances.
Genoa had a €10m option to buy in June 2024. They passed. With a €30m deal now on the table for Inter, that decision looks very different in hindsight.
If the move goes through on the terms currently being discussed, Tottenham will bank a significant fee for a player who never truly established himself in North London, while Inter secure a prime-age wing-back with Serie A experience and World Cup exposure, having featured for England at the 2026 tournament.
The Dumfries era at San Siro is over. Inter’s next right flank might soon belong to Djed Spence – and this time, there will be no understudy role.
